How does one tell the difference?

I have no idea! I got my IUD placed on 11/23 and I'm still spotting/bleeding!!! Just shoot me! I have no idea if I've gotten AF again, if I'm just spotting, if it's normal or when it will stop. Sorry, I guess I'm no help!!

I have the mirena and for me I can tell because I became a super beotch right before my period (holy hormones Batman)! Flow was also alot heavier for me.

I'm hoping the spotting is going to stop soon because this is getting old! But I guess it's better than remembering a pill everyday and I don't want to pull it out because it hurt like a mother getting that thing put in.

Ugh! I got Mirena a week ago and have had increased bleeding (more than spotting, but not super heavy) for the last few days. I'm also more moody. WTF. I hate hormones.

I've had mine since Nov 29th. I have noticed that the spotting flow has become less. But I've had two periods since then and it's been no fun mood-wise.

i got mirena on 12/5 and had bleeding the day of insertion. Then spotted non stop up until xmas eve and then it started like a period w/ some mild crampin and bright red bleeding, sorry maybe TMI. Anyway the bleeding tapered off and for the first time in 12wks i had one full day (today) of no spotting! so i'm guessing that was af last week. We'll see how the next few days go. I have a follow up appt. this thurs to check to make sure it's placed correctly.

If I only need a pantiliner, I think of it as spotting, whereas if I need a tampon and it's lasting at least a few days, I think of it as a period. I had Mirena put in 11/29, and I was spotting on/off a couple weeks later. And now for the past week or so, I've needed a tampon, so I definitely think I started my period.

I had my IUD placed a month ago. Right after I bleed really heavy for about a week. I wasn't sure then if it was my period coming back or from the IUD placement. Well right before Christmas I started bleeding again. It was also heavy and about a month since I had bleed after my IUD so it turns out it was my period

I am just now stoping bleeding so it looks like I'm gonna have longer heavier periods than I did before LO. I'm still hoping that with time they will be less heavy and last a week or less.

Hopefully this pp bleeding stuff will clear up for us soon! As some of you know from reading my frustrated posts, I'm in this same boat. I got AF 12/16 and bled until my Mirena insertion on the 21st, then stopped all bleeding/spotting for two days ...aaaand it came back and I've bled/spotted ever since. Though it's lighter than the period bleeding I experienced on the 16th last month.

(poss tmi?) What's weird with me is the blood tends to go through the phases like it would with AF - begins crimson, ends dull brown-ish clear and the cycle starts again. WTH?

I agree with the pantyliner=spotting , more heavy-duty pad or tampon = poss AF.
