Anyone else wearing breast shells for flat/inverted nipples to help prepare for breast feeding?  Is it working?

Re: Breast shells for flat/inverted nipples

  • i purchased nipple shields...I tried them with DS last time and what i found is that the nipple would fill with milk and leak all down my abdomen/shirt....it got sticky and messy....eventually i ended up EP for 9 months....

This time i will again attempt breastfeeding...first without the shields, then if no luck with the shields, and if no luck then EP again!

    Hope that helps.

  • I'm not wearing shells, but I have shields to use in case I need them. I have inverted nipples and have used them in the past.

  • i was given shells to wear after DS was born and they told me I had inverted nipples. By the time we got home from the hospital, the shells were full of my milk that had just come in, it was a total mess. I had to use nipple shields to BF him, I was never able to stop using the shields. I BF for 4 months and was done with it. This time I'm going to FF from the start, it was just very difficult with the way my body was made. GL to you though!

  • I've been using breast shields today to nurse, but didn't do anything beforehand to prepare.  So far she's been able to latch on great once without the breast shield, and I'm hopeful that she's able to continue to build on that.  In the meantime, the breast shield is at least helping her latch on and get what she needs (and she's doing an awesome job getting the colostrum out).

The LC said that I should just keep trying without and gave me some tips/pointers to try to help with that.

  • Ive tried several brands. The ones that worked the best for me were the Medela. I never had any leaking problems or it moving around when baby would nurse. It was a huge help. After having the shield on for a little while I actually was able to take it off and have him latch onto the nipple itself. The shiels pulled the nipple out enough just for him to latch on.

GL! I know it is frustrating sometimes.

  • I use nipple shields. The hospital actually gave me a free Medela one and I've purchased a couple more that have yet to come in. Honestly, I would not have been able to BF if it wasn't for the shield. Yes, like PP stated, I have a problem with the shield filling up and leaking down my shirt at first. I am just careful and lay a towel over her Boppy and keep it there until I put the shield back in the container that I keep for it. I don't have to change my shirt or anything afterwards.

  • I went to see the lactation consultant last week and she said that they used to recommend wearing shells at the end of pregnancy and then using them before attempting to breast feed but there isn't really much evidence that they are helpful She says now she just recommends the shields if the baby has problems latching but said there isn't anything to do to prepare until after he is born.

    I hope that helps!

  • I think a lot of the PPs are confusing breast shields, which are worn during nursing to help baby latch with breast shells (sometimes called nursing cups), which are worn in the bra in place of nursing pads to help the nipple stay erect.

My mom had problems with flat/inverted nipples and wore shells with both me and my sister.  After taking a BFing class and learning to determine what type of nipples I have using the "pinch test".  Mine look erect but when pinched retract and become somewhat inverted/flat.

BRU only had the Medela shells, which I bought today, however I plan to order two more pairs from this company https://www.pharmics.com/ocalette.htm as they're less expensive.

I've only been wearing them for a few hours, and I'm not due for 3 more weeks so we'll see if they work.  My mom was able to nurse both me and my sister using the shells (no sheild for feedings) so I know they can work.
