LO hardly eats at daycare

This is my third week back at work & LO is hardly eating at daycare.  I have given her bottles so it isn't new to her.  I don't understand why she isn't eating.  She ate 4 oz in 10 hours today!  When we get home all she wants to do is nurse.  Is this normal? Is there anything I can do to get her to eat the BM at daycare?

Re: LO hardly eats at daycare

  • DS took a few weeks to get used to daycare - and he's in a small home-based one with 4 other kids max.  The excitement and the noise and new sights are mesmerizing.  He went from eating 3 5oz bottles with Daddy to about 5oz total for a while at daycare.

Enjoy the time with LO nursing at night - I thought of it as a little reminder to slow down in the evenings and just relax after a day at work (which doesn't happen anymore now that I'm comfortable - and miserable - at work).  Also take advantage of the excess milk you're probably pumping to build your freezer stash even more!

I bet in a few more days, she'll be eating more normally.  As long as she's at a good weight, there's nothing to be concerned about at this point.  DS has always been a big boy, and the pediatrician practically laughed at me when I expressed my concern about his lack of appetite at daycare.  Stick out tongue

  • My daughter is the same way. She'll have 6oz or so during the day and she's 10 months old. I send four 4oz bottles with her every day. It does help with the freezer stash!

Like the previous poster mentioned, it has helped me to slow down in the evenings and just enjoy my nursing time with her. My husband is amazing and does all of the cooking and stuff so I can sit and nurse when needed.

If baby seems happy then all is [likely] well! :-)

  • It's normal.  My LO hates the bottle.  You can make sure the DC is taking her to a quiet place to feed her so she's not distracted.
  • If you want to google more about it, this is called Reverse Cycling.  I sometimes wish my LO did this!  She seems to have the opposite problem....eating more at daycare than at home!  :-)
