Kind of a dumb question about shoes

Is there a reason to buy $50 shoes?  Are they better for kids?  I'm talking something like a Pediped vs the Converse I usually buy. I'm just curious...or is it a style thing?

Re: Kind of a dumb question about shoes

  • I think the extra money is good when they're first learning to walk and need the extra flexibility. So many of the cheaper shoes don't provide that.  Now I am perfectly happy with the Sears $12.99 suede boots she's running around in today, and she absolutely adores them.

  • I just buy them off Zulily or super sale when I find them, I flat out refuse to buy her 40+ shoes.

But yeah, more important when they're first learning to walk. I think up to about age 2 it's best to be in softer, more flexible shoes.

  • We get "good" shoes, but DS really only has 1 pair that he wears everyday.  They are usually either Vans or some sort of tennis shoe.  He just got a new pair for Xmas - New Balance, I think (they were a gift from BIL & SIL).  Since he literally wears them everyday, I don't mind spending more on them so they will last longer and he has good foot support.  Since they are better quality, they usually stay in decent shape so we usually don't have to replace them until he grows out of them.  If he had several different pair to switch between (which is usually the case with girls), I might not care as much, since it would be pretty pricy to have several pair of "good" shoes they would likely grow out of in a few months.

ETA:  DS is also a Wide in shoes, and that is hard to find in cheaper brands.

ETA#2:  We needed some brown loafers recently, and I just picked some up at Target.  He'll probably have grown out of them before he needs to wear them again!

  • Honestly I've spent $5 on shoes for A and I've spent $50... it depends for me on the shoe.  Shoes she wears every single day must be comfy, cute and fit well.

I bought her some Pediped flex shoes last December and they came with thicker insoles that I took out eventually and put the thinner ones in.  She wore those shoes for an entire year!  Heck, she wore them today, it's crazy to me that one pair of shoes could be worn for 13 months on a pre-schooler.  So, my opinion is yes, the $50 PediPeds are absolutely worth it.

  • Like KelleyA, for me it depends on the shoe.  I don't mind spending $30-$40 on a good pair of tennis shoes that he'll wear to school most days, but for most other types of shoes I keep it in on the cheap. For special occasions where he'll need dress shoes or something that's not a tennis shoe,  I try to find them as cheap as possible since he'll only wear them a few times at most. I've had good luck finding name brand shoes on sale at Kohl's and then using a coupon for a better deal.

  • I have never spent that much on shoes for C.  I'll search out a deal or go to the outlet when there are sales.  We mostly wear Stride Rite if I can find good ones.  I also still by him shoes that have a good deal of flex in them.  I just refuse to get the ones that I can't manually bend at all.  That being said he always has about 4 pairs of shoes for each season.  The boy needs to match :-)

  • Until I found the Stride Rite outlet I was paying that. They are much cheaper at the outlet and there are always deals. So, yes, I do buy DS what are considered to be good shoes with support. We were stressed the importance of good shoes for long term benefit from both our parents. Also, DS is very big for his age and in my opinion good shoes are important for him and his feet. That being said, DS never has more than 2 pair of shoes at a time. Boys shoes are pretty boring, unlike girls.
