starting solids...or not! some TMI

DS is 5.5 months and we've been dabbeling in solids.  Mostly just bites here and there from our plate (mushy stuff like homemade guacamole, mashed potatoes, smooshed whatever) - he's been gnawing on raw foods as well, not really consuming much more than food flavored slobber...

My question is this - he's been fussy at night, maybe gassy?  Maybe constipated (4am this morning I got him in the bath where he pooped a small amount but more "solid" than his usual breastmilk poo - still not solid but not liquid either).

But he's happy all day, even when his bite of solids is in  the morning.  He naps the same during the day.  I'm trying to figure out if the night time fussiness is related to the solids or something else all together.

For now, we're stopping solids - I need some sleep and either this works or it doesn't.  It can't be much worse.  (in bed by 10:30pm, awake at least every hour, usually fussy for 20+ minutes in between).

Might be a growth spurt?  I'm too tired to try and solve the world's most complicated puzzle.

My question is - was your EBF baby fussy only at night (if at all) when you started solids?

Re: starting solids...or not! some TMI

  • Yes, I remember thinking the same thing when we started solids with both kids (they were both EBF until solids too). I think we took a break like you did and then started just doing super bland foods for a while (oatmeal, etc) and their tummies just have to get used to it. hth! Its hard to remember now :)

  • I am new to feeding my baby (He is 6 months now).  I started at 4 months when he demonstrated interest in food..otherwise.. I would have waited until 6 months.

He may not be ready for raw food.  Some raw vegetables and fruits may be hard for babies to digest.  (That's what that I have says)

I have given my baby bananas, apple, squash, prunes, and avacado to start with.  I am starting to add more veggies/fruits that are deemed good for his age (months) and adding herbs/spices!

I think if the poop comes out hard or firm- he may be constipated (and we know how uncomfortable that is!).  Avacado and rice cereal can cause constipation.  Apple and prunes are good fiber! ;-)

I hope that helps.  If you have more- I hope your ped doctor is good at answering questions over the phone! :-)
