1st Trimester

Increasing HCG levels but Dropping progesterone Levels

Hey everyone! This is my first pregnancy and I couldn't be happier! Of course the joy comes with worry as well. I have PCOS and had been TTC for almost a year. I am 5 weeks and 5 days pregnant and had a question about my progesterone. I have had 4 beta levels drawn the first set was 109 and then 210 (48 hours later) and my progesterone was 22, this was almost 2 weeks ago when i was 4 weeks along. My second set of Beta levels were 2896 (if they had doubled every 48 hours since my last level they should have only been 1200) so i was thrilled with this high number and 48 hours after that, they were 7596 again a great high level, over doubling! However, last week they drew my progesterone on both days by my request and it had gone from my 4 week level of 22, to 15.4 and then 14.2. I talked to the nurse about this concern of dropping progesterone and she said that they were not worried and that as long as my hcg levels were raising like they have been, that it was a viable pregnancy. I am still concerned, especially having PCOS and i feel like i might need to be on progesterone supplements. I also wonder if they have dropped again, so I am calling the doctor in the morning to request more lab work. I don't mean to be over bearing but I know that progesterone is what keeps your baby going until the placenta takes over at around 12 weeks. I don't think it could hurt to ask to get it checked out again. Does anybody have any thoughts, advice or experience on this matter? Thank you so very much!

Re: Increasing HCG levels but Dropping progesterone Levels

  • From my understanding, progesterone levels can vary widely from day to day, and even within the day (the levels can change if you've eaten, etc).  So I would not worry too much about the progesterone level you mention.  I think your progesterone levels have to be below 10 before they will give you supplements.

In my case, I have a very short luteal phase and had a miscarriage in June, so my doctor gave me progesterone supplements as a precaution.  Actually, I insisted they give them to me.  It seems like some doctors are against progesterone supplements and others figure it can't hurt, the research is not really clear.

Your HCG levels look great so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

    Congrats!

  • I went on Sat and my beta was 1070 and sun beta was 1434 but p was 6.9, they started me on suppositories. My nurse called before and they don't seem that worried. Although the on all nurse that called sun freaked me out. I had an U/s on sun and we saw the sac. I go back sun for my blood and u/s to hopefully see the HB. Even though your p4 has dropped its not below 10 so I doubt they'll give you anything but can't hurt to ask!
