Someone please give me advice

I'm at my wit's end with trying to figure this out.  D wakes up tfrom his nap and immediately starts throwing a screaming fit.  Screaming at the top of his lungs, crying, etc.  This goes on for at least 30 minutes.  He is awake and will not let me hold him, help me calm him down or anything.  If I even look at him or talk to him, he gets louder and runs away.  If I pick him up or hold him, he just kicks and flings and finally wiggles away from me.  It scares me and hurts me at the same time because I know he doesn't know how to regain control, but he won't let me touch him or help him.  I don't know what to do anymore.

Re: Someone please give me advice

  • Oh my gosh I'm so sorry.  I can't imagine how frustrating and upsetting that must be.  I don't have any experience with them, but it kinda sounds like night terrors.  MrsRosie went through those with A, so maybe she'll chime in with some advice.

  • My DD tends to do something similar, and the only thing that seems to help is to convince her to eat something.  Sometimes it ends up being a treat, like gummies, just to get something in her and regulate her blood sugar and calm her down.  She sees an endocrinologist due to her height "short stature" so we know she doesn't have diabetes or any metabolic issues, but for some reason, if she hasn't eaten a good lunch or takes a later than usual nap, she just wakes up in a horrible mood and food seems to be the fastest way to fix it.

  • My daughter does that sort of thing sometimes. I just sit a bowl of cheerios and juice next to her and leave her alone (not ALONE, alone - you know what I mean).

  • I really don't think it's a night terror.  We've experienced that as well and this is different.  He's fully awake.  The only way I got him to calm down just now is because I started crying myself because I couldn't take it anymore :(

Does it end sooner if you don't give him any attention for it?

No.  He just keeps going.  I ignore him for a long while today and it just didn't stop.  Every day it seems to get a little longer and a little worse. I feel like I'm going to lose my mind if I don't figure something out soon.

  • I don't have any ideas other than to ask his pedi and see if he/she has any thoughts. I'm so sorry you and he are having to go through that.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Definitely sounds familiar - DD went through this and still does it every now and then.  Our pedi told us it was definitely night terrors.  It's like she turned into this screaming demon that would tense up her whole body and scream and freak out for no apparent reason.  It did not happen every day, but at its peak, it probably happened every other day for a bit.  I started to be able to tell from her cry what I was in for.  If she was kinda whiny in her room before she got out of bed, that usually meant that she was going to have one of those episodes again - and the pedi suggested just leaving her in her room longer until she is REALLY eady to get up.

That has helped a lot - so sometimes she cries just a little and whines a lot and I just leave her in there and after like 5 minutes she usually falls back asleep for a bit and then wakes up much happier.

I'd definitely talk to your pedi though to rule out other issues.

GL, I know how upsetting and hard that can be - I cried many times during these episodes b/c she just seemed so helpless and confused.
