We are looking to buy a crib for the nursery and we really just want a basic white crib and I can't believe how much trouble I'm having. Most of the cribs seem to be convertable, and I don't really want to spend more for that feature because you still need to buy the add ons for a bed when you want to convert them.
We were thinking about looking on craigslist, but since the safety standards have changed requiring fixed sides, I don't think we will find any used cribs that meet those standards.
I found one crib that is a white convertable for $300 at TJ kids in BC (we live in Canada). I've looked online at Sears and Babies R Us but didn't really see anything better (ie cheaper!). Is that really as low as I'm going to find? Would it make sense for us to go to the states and look at Target to find something cheaper? Anyone from BC know of any great deals?
Re: Crib Pricing Question
I know Ikea has a few white cribs that are pretty cheap and get good reviews.
Here is one for $100 https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20203332/
Have you looked at Ikea? I don't have a copy of the latest Baby Bargains (or my old one either, actually), but I remember that they were very highly rated in terms of safety and they are basic cribs. We were there yesterday and they run between $80-$150. If SIL's crib falls through for DS1, we'll be getting him an Ikea crib and converting it to a toddler bed in a couple of months.
We bought our set for DS at Walmart after the exact same set had been sold out/backordered at BRU for months. It's a great set and we're buying the same thing but in brown for this LO.
I can't justify spending a lot on a crib either, so depending on where in Canada you are, it might be worth it to find a Walmart or Target there (although most of the stuff is on line you you may end up spending a fortune on shipping).
I agree wiht you - I'd avoid craigslist and the like. You just can't tell how safe it is that way.
Good luck!
And here are a bunch of reviews:

I bought the Graco Stanton for $150. I can be a bit, shall we say, overzealous, with spending and was REALLY proud of myself on this one. DH put it together this weekend and it is a sturdy, good looking crib. I found it in white for you...
it is convertible, but we will more than likely not be using that option either.

THIS!
I have been so frustrated with the "baby industrial complex" the same as I have found in other major life event industries. Prices and understanding WHY they cost so much kill me. So Ikea and I have become super good friends because they are affordable and meet every safety standard. They are always updating and improving on products and keep customers informed of safety changes.
Now...if they only carried strollers! hahaha That is the thing that is KILLING me in trying to understand.
We have a DaVinci for DS and love it! Was only 200-250ish in a woodtone. Not sure if white is cheapear. It is a good looking crib, stylish, but not super expensive like a lot of other cribs.

I'm just starting the crib search too... and am looking for under $200, so I'll have to check out some of these options. Thanks ladies!
Also... I don't know if this matters to you, but I just learned that most cribs are finished with toxic finishes... so look for one that specifically says non toxic finish and made of hard wood. To me, I just assumed all cribs were non toxic... lol.
