Deflated by my doctor's appt

Oh, I just need to lament....we are scheduled for our 2nd dr's appt this coming Friday and were so excited...thinking that because we are 10 wks, they will want to let us hear the baby's heartbeat.  My sweet husband swore he heard the dr say that was on the schedule this time.  Well, I double checked after really trying not to get my hopes up - it's not on the schedule for this appt.  We're just taking a stinkin' medical history.  If my appts are every 4 weeks, does this mean that I'll have to wait another month to hear the heartbeat??? I'm dying here!

Re: Deflated by my doctor's appt

  • what "schedule"  did you get?

every dr does things differently.  are you douing the Nt scan at 11- 13 w 6 days? as then you would need an ultrasound and blood work

  • Buy your own doppler.  They only cost about $60 and you can listen any time you want (provided you are far enough along).

  • We had a "medical history" appointment at 8 weeks, and at that time they told us we wouldn't have an U/S or heartbeat check until 12 weeks. I asked if they could do an U/S earlier and they said yes. So I got a "dating" U/S at 9 weeks and saw the heartbeat as well. Also, because they coded it as "dating", my insurance covered it.

Just wanted to share, all OB's are different as well as insurance providers, but it never hurts to ask :)

  • Alot of doctors don't let you hear the HB till about 12 weeks. When I went at my 11w appt. the nurse said it was still 'early' to be listening to the HB. I know all doctors are different but that's pretty standard from what I can tell.

  • Have you had your pap and pelvic exam yet? If you haven't there might be a chance that they'll do an U/S and you will be able to see the heartbeat. You can ask your OB if they can do an u/s to set your mind at ease. Some OB offices are really nice about that, where others are pretty strict about only doing it when scheduled.

    Good Luck!

  • I have my next appt at almost 12 weeks and my OB said she'd try to hear the HB with the doppler...I'm actually nervous b/c it's probably borderline to hear it and if she can't find out, I will freak.  An extra U/S would be nice though!
