  My DS started getting sick every other week right after we put him in a DC center. It took about 6 months before he was well more often than he was sick.

  Yeah, I try to look at it like we are building a healthy immune system for when she gets to school. As a teacher, I see that it doesn't matter if it happens in DC or grade school; it's going to happen.

  Of course, I still hate seeing Lo sick ALL THE TIME!

  dd has been in dc since she was 3 months. in the fall/winter she has more sick days then well. the pedi mentioned that when they are young and in day care, they may only average 8 to 10 days of being well before they get sick again.

  dd started dc when she was 7 wks old (early september) then the colds started in about january and didn't let up until spring. it didn't help that she was teething at the time too which further suppressed her immune system. while it seems they get sick CONSTANTLY when they're 1st at daycare, it does subside. this is dd's 3rd year at her dc and we've had ONE cold so far this season.

  the thing is that your lo is being subjected to a whole new bunch of germs at dc and until his body gets used to those germs, he's gonna get sick.

  My DS was sick a lot in the 5 months he went to a center. Within the first 2 weeks he had a mild ear infection, his first ever. The next month he had roseola and croup back to back. We skipped a month of sickness and then the last month he got roto virus, which he had been vaccinated for. I hate to scare you but daycares are a cesspool of germs. It was like that at the daycares I worked at in college as well. Hopefully you have better luck than we did.

  DD started daycare around 14 months and hasn't been sick yet, but she's only 18 months, so the true winter season hasn't caught up with her yet.

  DS was taken care of in our home until he was 22 months of age by either my mom or my MIL.  He had never been sick.  No fevers, no colds, no nothing.  At 22 months of age, just a month ago, he started daycare part time - 3 days a week.  By the end of his 2nd day he had a runny nose and a cough.  It persisted for a couple of weeks.  Just before the end of his 3rd week (still only going 3 days a week) he developed a low grade fever, accompanied with diarrhea, which turned into a full blown virus + double ear infection, accompanied with vomiting and a fever of 104 - landed us in the ER.   Our Christmas holiday weekend was craptastic - literally   Poor little guy.  A few days into the virus and ear infection, after being on meds, he broke out in a terrible rash all over his arms, legs and butt - luckily it doesn't bother him.  Yeah, he pretty much got it all after just 8 visits to the daycare. Murphy's Law?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  Just glad DH is in between work contracts, as him being home has enabled me to not have to take any sick time from work during this horrible time.  Hoping he'll go a few months before getting really sick again.  Cough/runny nose we can handle.

  Ugh, I am dreading this when we put Gavin in daycare! He is home with a nanny right now and hardly ever sick, except for the occasional cold (which he has now coincidentally). Makes me want to prolong it.

  My lo is in an at home daycare... He doesn't get sick too often. And sadly, I think he's "that kid" who brings the sickness in because he plays with his cousin a lot and she's in a larger DC. SHE is sick ALL THE TIME!!!!! and it's really annoying.

  DS has been in daycare since he was 10 weeks and hasn't been as sick as often as I was afraid of. He's had 3-4 colds that were bad, a few other minor sniffles that didn't slow him down at all, and just a couple weeks ago finally brought home a 24-hour stomach bug that got all of us and a couple extended family members in the end. Usually the dcp is super-sensitive to sick children though...she knew which kid was the source and called his mom asap to come take him out but it was already too late. She let us know she was not happy about it!
  

  DCP has a policy that you use their hand sanitizer as you walk in and I think that really helps. Your LO will probably go through a bunch of colds but you can definitely do your part to make sure he's never the source of getting other kids sick!

  ETA ours is an in-home and I personally feel that fewer kids = fewer illnesses. They have 9 kids max but usually more like 6.

  T has been in DC since 3 months. Most of that time she has been at an in-home with up to 4 other kids. She has had roseola and that is it. That was her first fever.

  I have not read any of the responses, but I think one advantage you have is having a tween bringing home germs all the time. DS2 is sick all the time.  It is part of life and I just go with the flow now.  Sucks.

  Yes, he gets sick about 1-2 times a month, so far just in the winter.  While I find the frequency annoying, he is very tolerant of being sick.  When he was sick before daycare (which was maybe twice) it was like the world was ending.  But now, he is more tolerant of colds, etc.

  DH and I were never in daycare as kids.  I was still sick all of the time, but DH never got sick until he went to kindergarden.  So, yes, each kid is different and I guess the question is do you want to deal with it now or later.  Good luck!
