Food Allergy

So frustrated.

DS was tested for only the top 8 foods and cat. He tested severly allergic to milk and slight allergies to peanuts, soy, corn and wheat. We have cut out everything completely except corn (which we are doing next, but he barely eats anything with corn) but even when he is eating something that I know is free of all of those things, he gets hives and I have no idea whats causing it. I suspect cinnamon and garlic, but again, he will not have had any of these and he gets hives. I don't know what to do at this point. He has gained less than a pound in the last 7 months and we think its because of his allergies, he has constant diarrhea, so if by 18 months he is still not gaining weight we have to see a GI. I wish I knew what to do for him, but I don't. He just ate a few glutino pretzels and his cheeks broke out, I don't know if its the pretzel or if I didn't wash my hands well enough after eating some hershey kisses.

  • Has he seen an allergist??? You need to start a food diary & track EVERYTHING that he has. We did this & took the entire list of "suspects" in to his allergist to be tested for. We had to break it up into 3 appts because there were just too many to do at once. With this we found that he's allergic to things like chicken, beef, sesame, olives, white fish & quinoa. It is much more likely that a kid with multiple allergies will have allergies outside the top 8 as well. If your LO has not seen an allergist yet then you need to get in there ASAP, if you already have one then do th diary & go in armed with a detailed list. Also, why are the waiting til 18 mos to refer to a GI? Is his weight low? W see an allergist AND a GI, they work together because a lot of the issues overlap. I know how you feel, don't be afraid to push for more testing.

  • Completely agree with PP. A food diary will be really helpful in determining what the issue is. Also, I know you said you haven't cut corn yet, but I'm pretty sure the Glutino pretzels have corn in them, so that might be why he broke out afterwards. Try giving him items with as few ingredients as possible. My DD will have ground turkey, rice noodles and broccoli for lunch. The more ingredients a food/snack has, the more difficult it will be to determine what the issue is. GL

  • He has seen an allergist, but he only tested for the top 8, he was supposed to have another appointment this week, but I postponed it so that I could start a food diary. I figured out that he is allergic to garlic and cinnamon, garlic is in a lot of what he have.

The glutino pretzels do have corn which I didn't realize. SO picked them up and I didn't read them, big mistake. Mostly everything he eats has very few ingredients.

He's also been known to get in the pantry and get himself a not safe snack. I will be putting only allergy-friendly foods on the shelf he can reach or buying a lock for the door. I am a SAHM, and he gets in the pantry if I am in the bathroom or not paying him full attention while cleaning.

His weight is very low, he is in the 5th percentile where he used to be in the 50-75th. He has gained less than a pound in over 7 months. I want more testing, his father is/was allergic to ALOT but most of his allergies didnt come out until he was about 16, so for some stupid reason I didnt think our son would be allergic to that much so young. I suspect beef garlic and cinnamon right now but i am sure if i keep a food diary I will be able to figure it out more
