Austin Babies

Do you mind that I come in?

Y'all don't mind me posting here already when I haven't moved do you? I am so scared about this move (leaving Oregon April 1st!) with the kids now that I'm a SAHM and making friends will be super hard without working....It's going to be a totally different experience than I had living there before. Just wanting to get to know you and possibly meet up with some people when I get there.

  • Of course not! At least I don't :) And, I for one, would love to meet up with you when you get to town. We are in Round Rock and it's one of my resolutions to meet and make more mommy friends!

  • Of course not!  I am from Oregon (moved here about 15 years ago).  Get ready for some HOT weather!

What part of Austin will you be moving to?

    Thanks ladies! Smile

I actually have no idea exactly where we're moving. We lived in Round Rock for 8 months about four years ago before we came back home to the NW (I'm actually from Seattle but DH is from Oregon) to start our family. We're looking at houses, looking at apartments to rent...houses to rent...I don't know. I'm so overwhelmed. He's not getting relocation benefits for the promotion he got so we're paying for it all ourselves and can't afford to fly out and house hunt before we move so it's all a blind move! We have some friends there still that we used to work with that are able to kind of look around for us, but I won't actually physically be able to see whatever place we decide to go with until we get there. I'm terrified. I'm sure it'll be fine though. I loved it when we lived there before, but I was working, had no kids, and was only 24 years old (I'm 27 now) so I was into  going downtown to 6th with friends etc. I am VERY excited for Sea World and to be able to get out on walks etc when it's not too hot there. I loved the RR Outlets and being so close to IKEA (YAY!) before. We lived near the Dell Campus at The Mansions apartments last time. From what I've been told on here a good place to live with kids is Cedar Park...I'm finding nice houses in Leander too though. Is Leander good or should I stay towards CP? I'm scared of tornados, floods, fires, etc that I know can happen down there so I'm trying to stay in a safe area.

Wow...that was a LOT of rambling and run on sentences! Sorry. Anyway, I'm excited to meet some of you when we get there. My kiddos and I will need friends. We have a great group of friends here that I met off the Oregon Bump Board when DD was 7M old and I am going to miss them terribly.

  • What an exciting move! Cedar Park is a little closer in to town than Leander, so you won't have as much of a drive. But you'll get more bang for your buck the farther out you are. Pflugerville is a nice little 'burb right near the Dell area, RR outlets, etc. It's really boomed in the last five years, so it's probably a lot bigger/more developed than it was the first time you were here.

Welcome! Good luck with the move!

    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • Where will your husband be working? in Round Rock? If so I would look in Round Rock, Pflugerville, Cedar Park and maybe Leander.  Depending on where in Leander that is, some can be really far out.  All these areas are family friendly, have good schools and don't really have any "bad" areas of town.

    Good luck on your move!

He'll be working off of Grand Avenue Pkwy. in RR/Austin. (I think the address is Austin but it's so close to RR) We used to work there together when I lived there before. I love that area.

  • Georgetown is also a great place to live and raise kids, and it's an easy, straight-shot to Grand Ave Pkwy.  Good luck with your move and by all means, hang out here and get to know us - this is a fantastic group of women!
  • What part of Oregon are you in?  I have family in Salem and Portland and sisters in Ashland.

And of course no one here discriminates about where you post from- there are plenty of regulars on the board that either don't have kids or relocated out of Texas and stayed on the board.

    Welcome. Smile

Ah, definitely add Pflugerville to your list of areas to look at living then. It is right there. Other areas near there that are pretty family friendly would be Milwood( in Austin)- its right down Parmer (really close to Grand Avenue) and there are some nice areas in Wells Branch as well.

  • I was going to say, "Post away!"  We moved to Indiana last year and I still post here regularly.  This is a great group of ladies.

    Welcome. Smile

I live just outside of Portland. My parents live in Salem. Smile Ashland is one of my favorite places. They have a Shakespeare Festival there that is amazing and it's so pretty there!

As for places to live, I feel like Pville was a hit or miss area yeah? Some parts looked really sketchy when I was there. I'm sure it's grown a bit since I left, but it just didn't seem like the best area for a family. Maybe I'm wrong. I did enjoy Georgetown but my DH thinks it's too old. We played tennis at the school there. It's a cute area. So...the search continues! Still have to figure out if we're renting, buying.....?? So much to do!
