Breastfeeding

XP: Breastfeeding past 1 year while working

I need some advice on partially weaning my DS, who just turned one.

I am happy to keep breastfeeding, but my problem is that I work part-time, 20 hours a week, and I'm needing to stop pumping while at work.  Right now when he's at home he nurses 4-5 times per day (always in the morning, before naps, and bedtime, and sometimes in the late afternoon).  I've introduced cow's milk so he can have that when he's at daycare, but he's kind of hit or miss with it.

Also, he's used to nursing to sleep or taking the bottle to sleep for naps at daycare.  I don't really know how to transition him to going to sleep without a bottle. He does well with a cup at meals, so I'm not really wanting to put cow's milk in the bottle, but I'm not sure how to get him laid down without it.  Any thoughts? Is it possible to have him nurse just a couple times on days I work, but still keep nursing the 4-5 times when I'm home?

  • Have you tried just giving water in the sleeping bottles?

I would drop 1 pump session/week at work, and then just let him nurse as he wants to when you're together.

  • I haven't had my DCP try water in the bottle, but may be a good idea. I just am worried that to get him to sleep for her without a bottle, I need to get him used to going down for naps at home without nursing, and so far that has not worked well at all.  I'm not big into CIO, but have tried letting him cry for 15 minutes and he just seems to get more and more worked up.

  • No Cry Sleep Solution has some no-cry ideas for breaking the nurse-to-sleep association. We've only been trying for a couple days, so I don't have any success to report yet, but if you're looking for ideas that's a good book to get.
  • I stopped pumping at 1 year, but we are still BFing.  I didn't have any issue with supply until recently, but I'm also pg.

  • I pumped at work til 1 year and then stopped pumping at work cold Turkey once I switched my son over to cow's milk at daycare. I had no issues keeping up with DS nursing on the weekends or any other days I did have off.
