My 2012 Project - 12 Important Books in 2012

Not too long ago, there was a news article about the 100 most important books of all time (in Literature) or something like that. After reviewing the list, I discovered just how few I had actually read. My friend Amy noted the same thing and picked 12 important books to read in 2012, one per month. I decided to join her. We have no official book club as there are no rules. This just gives us something to do instead of watching Hitch for the 100,000th time on TBS.

Here's our list:

January - Anna Karenina, Leo Tolstoy
February - The Beautiful and Damned, F. Scott Fitzgerald
March - The Bell Jar, Sylvia Plath
April - Tess of D'Ubervilles, Thomas Hardy
May - A Room with a View, E.M. Forster
June - Animal Farm, George Orwell
July - The Count of Monte Cristo, Alexandre Dumas
August - The Heart is a Lonely Hunter, Carson McCullers
September - Middlemarch, George Eliot
October - The Picture of Dorian Gray, Oscar Wilde
November - Brave New World, Aldous Huxley
December - War and Peace, Leo Tolstoy

I am starting Anna Karenina tonight. Anyone want to join me and start our own book club?

  • LOL at the Hitch comment. We watch it EVERYTIME it is on TBS too!

I did read Anna Karenina in high school and liked it.  Of your list, the only other book I read was The Count of Monte Cristo which was excellent (again read in h.s. but remembered I loved it. I have paperback somewhere in my house as I planned to re-read a bunch of years ago. That never happened...

  • Also find myself watching Hitch each time it comes on as well. Do love it.

It's been so long since I have read a book and I really have no excuse now since I was given a Kindle Fire for Christmas. Must start downloading. Nice idea for a 2012 project. Good luck and enjoy your reading.

It will cut into my Eurotrip watching though (always get stuck watching that one).

  • Ha Ha!  How can you not love Hitch!  As for reading.. I am so bad with starting books and never finishing them.  I started reading The Help a few months before the movie came out.  I never finished it but I saw the movie so now I see no reason to finish reading it.  Sigh..such a terrible example I am!

  • Fantastic list!  There are a bunch of those I've never read despite the fact that I supposedly graduated college with an English major.  Middlemarch is on my list for this year.  Maybe Anna Karenina too.
  • The only book on your list I have read is Brave New World, which I had to read in highschool and HATED.  I have a goal of reading 40 books this year, but not any of the "important" books.  I prefer bestseller mystery/suspense genre books and a bit of chick lit.  I read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played With Fire in December and have just started The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest.  All are awesome reads.  I uploaded 4 books to my Kobo (Canada's Kindle) just after Christmas, and hope to have those all read by the end of the month.  I love reading!

  • Great project! I've only read two on your list, and both back in high school. Sadly, I imagine someone graduating from high school today would never have even heard of any of them.

  • I love the idea. I'm an avid reader but find myself reading junk all too often. I think I've only read Dorian Gray but that was ages ago and I could read it again!
