C-sections

Aahhhh... I see what you'll have been talking about!

That c-section shelf, belly pooch, deflated balloon, or whatever you want to call the bottom part of my stomach. How do you get rid if it? Cardio? Ab workouts? Aside from wearing a girdle for the rest of my life, how do I get it to go away??

  • That is what I would like to know too. Mine won't go away :(

  • I don't think it does totally....unless you get plastic surgery to be honest.  It does get much, much better though.

I am down 20lbs from my prepregnancy weight and I still have it!  He did pull the skin as much as possible after delivery but you are so swollen, etc., they can only do so much.

  • It'll go away in time. You're only a month out.
  • I've lost all my baby weight and it's still there.  Only thing that helped after ds was running.  That got me looking better than I looked before I was even pregnant with ds.

  • It will go away but with age most keep a small little something. My last c-section was 7 years ago but before this pregnancy my stomach was flat.. Be encouraged and just keep up healthy habits.
  • 6.5 months pp and mine is still bad and I don't have hopes of it getting better.  I told DH after all the babies are born, it's tummy tuck time!

  • I think it varies person-to-person.  I've seen some serious postpartum skin flaps on plastic surgery shows but didn't have anything left after my section 6 1/2 yrs ago (by 12 wks postpartum I was all "in place" and over the rest of that postpartum year it just tightened up on it's own).  The incision does stay tight so if I'm sitting on the floor and lean forward (like doing gift wrap or changing a diaper or just reaching for something) the incision stays "tucked in" while the rest of me moves, but aside from that...  Hoping for the same outcome after this section next week!

  • It went away by 6 months PP with my first section and I attribute thatvto exercise but it stuck around to a small degree after sections 2 and 3. Seeing it again this time makes me sad :-(

  • It must depend on how good your doc is at closing your incision and how much weight you accumulated during the pregnancy? I had a verrry small bump after my surgery and it completely went away before the first month was over, so I don't know? It seems that for the majority, it doesn't ever go away? Almost makes me never want to undergo another cs, I probably wont be as lucky the next time around.

  • Can somebody link to a scientific study to show that this happens and it's not just pregnancy and how your body distributes weight?  I just ask b/c it went away after my first, but I've seen the "c/s shelf" on people who never had one.  I have one right now even though I had a VBAC, but it's just excess weight I'm carrying around this time and I'm only 9 months out from giving birth.  Last time it was sometime between 9-12 months that everything went back into place (for the most part).

  • Mine is getting smaller. I am doing a lot of cardio and ab work outs. My aunt has lost most of her only doing cardio and then there are lucky ones like a family friend who looks like she never had a baby and did nothing to loose the weight.
  • I don't have one. I had it for about 8 days after the surgery and now it's gone. I'm about 30lbs overweight, don't exercise, and gained 37lbs while pregnant. I did have a dr known for amazing csections and you can barely see my incision line at 2 weeks pp, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it. I just feel lucky!
  • I have the deflated balloon and honestly the more weight I lose the worse it looks.  It hangs now.  I weighed less when I left the hospital than I did when I got pregnant and have lost about 15 lbs more since then.  I think I would have a pooch just from pregnancy but the flap is so pronounced with the c/s incision crease.  Oh well, saving for the tummy tuck...already have a scar anyway.
