S/O overdue - state of placenta?

Hi ladies - I have a question for moms with outside babies or anyone with the appropriate medical knowledge.  I really want to avoid induction, personally the prospect of pitocin makes me anxious.  I know that there's a legit concern after a certain point though about placenta function.  I've found some articles about "methods of assessing placental function" but they're for the most part in academese.  Has anyone been able to successfully postpone or avoid induction by having their doctor determine that their placenta is doing fine?  If so, what did your doctor do?

Re: S/O overdue - state of placenta?

  • I'm not overdue yet, but I can give you my experience.  We were diagnosed as heading towards IUGR at 36w because LO's abdominal measurements had barely changed since our 32w growth scan and it put her overall at 12th%.  They looked at the placenta, which is grade 1 (I'm not exactly sure what that means) and did a cord Doppler, which showed the cord blood flow to be borderline.  Based on this I was told the placenta isn't functioning correctly and aging too quickly.  We were scheduled for BPP, NST & cord dopplers twice a week to make sure things weren't getting worse.  I was told that depending on those results and my BP, we would be inducing between 37-39w.  My OB was very concerned and did not want me going to 40w or over.  I'm scheduled to go to the hospital tonight for induction tomorrow morning.  I'm not sure if that really answers any of your questions.

  • Mud - I'm anxiously awaiting responses to this question.  My only thought is that the ladies on the natural birth board might have some insight into the issue.

  • I don't like to be induced unless medically necessary. I was "overdue" with #2 and after week 40 they began to check me a few times per week, with NSTs and ultrasounds to check on fluid levels and placenta. I am not sure what they are looking for in regards to the placenta, but they did check mine with ultrasounds. I ended up being induced at 42 weeks due to low fluid levels, but once they gave me cervadil to ripen the cervix, labor progressed on its own quickly. I never had to have pitocin or anything else. Good luck!

  • Oh, on the placenta - it can only be checked by u/s, what they're looking for is calcification.
