lotrimin for diaper rash

DS is on amoxicilin for an ear infection which has caused diarhea(sp) and therefore now a wicked diaper rash.  Pediatricians office said it is most likely from yeast and recommending using Lotrimin AF....anyone know if I can use this at every diaper change? and when it might start to make his poor little bum look better?

Re: lotrimin for diaper rash

  • We were advised to use it two times a day and it looked better after the first application. Yeast usually causes redness in the creases, for regular bad diaper rash I have found Triple Paste to work best (I have pretty much tried everything as my daughter had a nasty persistant rash for weeks.)

  • Yeast diaper rashes look like little dots all over the diaper area. They can be caused by antibiotic use, but since he's got diahrea, it might just be normal diaper rash.

If it is yeast and it isn't too bad, you should see results from the Lotrimin in 1-2 applications. We were told to use it 4 times a day.

If it's that bad, take him in and let the doctor see it. They can give you an Rx cream that has the Lotrimin active ingredient and a steroid to help it clear up faster.

  • I was told every diaper change until it's gone or even a day extra just to be safe.  You need regular diaper creme (zinc oxide) on top of the Lotramin.  It looked so much better after 1 day but took a few more days to clear up completely.

  • My pediatrician recommended lotrimin, topped with Desitin, then a little cornstarch baby powder when the exact same thing (ear infection and all!) happened with my LO 3 weeks ago.  It worked.  I refreshed it at every diaper change, though.

I clarified 2 times about using baby powder since I had read that it was a no-no, and the pediatrician said yes, it was important in this case to keep the moisture away from LO's skin.
