Overdue - what's your dr/mw's protocol?

I'm a few days past my due date.  My weekly appointment is tomorrow. And if nothing has happened before the, Friday I'll go back in for an ultrasound and NST as I'll hit 41 weeks over next weekend and they start worrying about the placenta at that point. What do your caregivers do once you due date has passed?

  • Sorry about the typos - hard to correct on the tablet.

  • My OB says he really wants to induce at 41 weeks.  He says if I am really against it they'll consider doing tests and letting me go a few days later.
  • Don't take this the wrong way, but I had a dream last night that you went into labor and I read the announcement this morning. I thought for sure it was real...

No idea what my doctor's practices are for when you're overdue. I need to ask about what the plan is for if/when I go into labor at my appt today!

  • At my last appointment the doc said that they "have a serious conversation" about induction at 41 weeks because of concerns about the placenta.  I would really prefer not to be medically induced, but obviously if my placenta isn't doing its job that's a different story.

  • The nurse told me a while back that they won't let me go over 41 weeks but I'm going to ask my doc about it this week since I'd like to avoid induction if possible.

  • At 40 weeks my OB starts doing ultrasounds & stress tests, they will let you go to 41 weeks as long as the baby is okay, then they'll induce.

  • The rule at my birth center is that you are not allowed to deliver there past 42 weeks. At 41 weeks you get a NST  and they set you up an appointment for a consult with their affiliated OB. If you make it to almost 42 weeks then they have you schedule an induction with that OB. I had a friend who used the same center and she barely made it at 41w5d. She was beyond thrilled!

  • my midwife starts natural induction methods at 41 weeks. I would be induced at the hospital at 42 weeks though I could probably get a few extra days if I did NSTs and everything looked normal. the placenta doesn't stop functioning at 41 weeks and as long as your NSTs and the baby's heartrate and stuff look good, there really isn't a reason to induce at 41 weeks.
  • My doc said once I pass my due date we'll schedule an ultrasound and if everything looks good we'll induce, she wont let me go past 41 weeks...thank god!

OMG - I wish your dream had been a sign.  I've had a few contractions that wrap around my back, but nothing rhythmic or timetable.  This baby seems quite comfortable in his warm little womb.

I need to double check it tomorrow, but I think my birth center is the same way - At 41w3d or 4d they would have to transfer me over to the hospital to start inductions, which would be a total bummer - I was really hoping for a water birth.

With that in mind, I'm off to waddle over to my local pedicure place with a copy of The Birth Partner in my bag.  I'm going to show them the diagrams of the pressure points on the ankle and beg them to do whatever they can to kick start this process.

  • My MWs said if I make it to 41.5 weeks we will then start to discuss induction, but not before then and it probably wouldn't happen till 42 weeks or later.

  • My OB office usually tries to schedule them for 41w. She offered me one for 40w b/c I'm having so many contractions, and I had two labors that were only 3 hours long. I am not sure what I'm going to do at this point. My OB's office measures your due date via u/s at 8w, but only changes it if it is more than a week off. Mine measured 6d small, so I'm taking that into consideration too. I know there is enough fluid and the baby is healthy in there. i don't need to rush it even if I am confident it would be a successful induction.
