Hi Ladies!
My beautiful baby boy made his appearance on Wednesday, December 28th. He is absolutely amazing and a complete love bug!
I was having contractions for about 40 mins on Monday night but then they stopped. The next morning I woke up at 5am and cleaned the entire house. I couldn't sit still as I had an insane feeling to nest. I went to my doctor's appointment and was 3 cm dilated but still only 60% effaced. I had this weird feeling he was going to show up soon but the doctor thought I still had a ways to go so we made an appointment for next week. I ran a bunch of errands that day and was having contractions on and off and they were a bit more intense then I've been experiencing. That night they became steady and were about 10 mins a part for 2 hours. I called the doctor and she said to wait until they were 3 - 5 mins a part as it could be false labor. I timed them until midnight and they were about 6 1/2 - 7 mins a part. Honestly I thought we should have gone to the hospital but I was so tired I decided to go to sleep and if I was still having them in the morning I would go to the hospital (probably not the best idea). I had three large twinges that were nothing like I'd felt before. They were almost like a huge kick that was strong enough to break my water. Well my water broke did break at 1:38 am. It was so strange. I was dead asleep but I heard this loud pop and I somehow simultaneously jumped out of bed and flew into the bathroom (which is about 4 feet away from my bed). My legs were soaked as was the bathroom floor but I only got a tiny bit on the sheets. I also lost my mucus plug and bloody show at that point. It was much thicker than regular water and I even considered showering off my legs before we left because it was pretty gross. I yelled for my dh that my water had broken and that we had to go. Thank god I had bought a package of super large extra absorbent pads that day because the water pouring out of me was insane. I soaked through one in a few mins and then a second by the time we got to the hospital at 2:15am. I also grabbed one of those crib saver sheets (the waterproof ones) and sat on it in the car.
So we get to the hospital and check in to the front desk. Now I had preregistered but the security guard decided to take his time verifying my info and printing out a registration form for us to sign. The whole time I was having contractions about 2 mins a part and I really wanted to throat punch this guy. Finally we go up to the maternity ward and they were so busy! There were already 5 woman in L & D rooms and there was no place for me to go. They put me in a regular room and hooked me up to a monitor for baby's heartbeat and for my contractions. They also drew my blood and put an IV in my hand to start fluids. I immediately got cold after that from the fluids and the contractions were getting intense. They were at the point where I couldn't talk or move through them. After about an hour one of the L&D rooms finally opened up and they moved me in there. I was begging for the epidural at this point but they had to check me to make sure I was dilated enough. Thank god I was 4 - 5 cms so they called for the epidural. They also put a heated blanket on me because by this time I was shivering from the cold of the fluids. The epidural didn't hurt at all! Honestly I think the IV catheter in my hand was worst. She said it would take about 20 mins to kick in but the nurse asked me how intense that contraction was a couple mins later and I replied "what contraction?". It was amazing!
So by this time it was about 4:30am and I was 5 - 6 cm dilated. The nurse said we should try to get some rest because it wouldn't be long before the baby arrived. We rested quietly for a little while when all of a sudden the monitor started going crazy and there were four nurses standing around me freaking out. They were paging the doctor, putting the oxygen mask on me and flipping me from my back to my left side and then my right side. The baby's heartbeat had dropped dangerously low. They got it to come back up and the doctor checked me again and I was 9 cm dilated. She suspected that either I had dilated so quickly that the baby dropped and so did his heart rate or he was pressing on the cord. My poor dh look like a deer in headlights. I reached for his hand and it was shaking like crazy! We tried to rest again but his heart rate kept dropping. At one point they even had to reach in and massage the top of the baby?s head, which increased his heart rate. It was crazy! It was 7am and I was finally 10 cm dilated and ready to push. I could feel a strong pressure in my bottom like I really had to poop (which thankfully I did not by the way). I pushed like a champ for an hour and could feel his head drop under my pelvic bone. They must cut off my epidural at some point because it was so painful as his head stretched through. Then finally at 8:06am Bruce Raymond finally popped out and they delivered him up onto my belly. He was 6 lbs 8 oz and 19 ?? long with a full head of hair. They toweled him off quickly and immediately put him up on my chest for skin on skin contact. I turned to my dh (who remained in his chair up by my head the entire time) and he was crying, which immediately triggered me to start crying. It was all so unbelievable!
Bruce was so alert and was actually picking up his head
to look around. I know infants can?t focus their eyes and can only see a few
inches in front of their faces but Bruce really studies your face and tracks
objects in the room. I know I may be a bit bias but I?m pretty sure that means
he?s a genius He began nursing within 10 mins and breastfeeds like a little
piggy. He goes anywhere from 1 ? 2 ? hrs between feedings at night and 1 ? 4
hrs during the day. I really didn?t think I was going to like breastfeeding at
all but honestly it is such a special time together. I?m looking forward to it
not hurting as my breasts and nipples are really sore but I?m glad I decided to
do it. Bruce is a complete bum and loves to be snuggled. Recovery has gone
pretty well. I had a second-degree tear and was so swollen at first. If you
ladies remember I had zero interest in a vaginal birth. But by day four I feel
significantly better and can move around and sit much better. My dh has been absolutely wonderful and has
been taking care of me and Bruce. It?s actually pretty funny because he told me
about a week before the baby was born that he is not really ?into? babies but
can?t wait until they?re able to start doing stuff together. Well let me tell
you, for someone who?s not ?into? babies he sure is a baby hog, lol! He is so
totally in love with our son and will sit there rocking and snuggling him for
hours. Seeing them together makes me fall in love with him even more than I
thought was even possible. I just couldn?t be happier right now!

Bruce is beautiful!! Congratulations to you and DH. Your birth story is similar to mine in several ways. I also have a little boy who is a piggy and breastfeeds constantly (I'm lucky if I get an hour break sometimes!) One of the most special moments for me (as you also said in your post) was right after Matthew was born, my husband started crying. I didn't cry right away because I think I was so shocked everything had progressed so quickly with me but when I saw DH cry, it was so special. My husband is not a very emotional guy in terms of crying and expressing his feelings verbally a lot but he kissed me and told me how proud he was of me and I will always treasure that and the look of absolute love and pride he had on his face when he saw his baby boy for the first time.
I am so glad everything turned out ok for you and Bruce arrived healthy. Congrats to you and your family!
