Does anyone else's LO gag themselves?

My LO has learned how to gag himself, and he seems to think it's really fun.  And then he pukes.  And then he does it again.  WTF?  I try not to react to it, because then he really goes for it (and starts laughing even more), but I find it really disturbing.

Please tell me your baby used to do this, and that it's a really short phase.  PLEASE.

  • DD just learned the same *awesome* trick. Poor DH got barfed on three times in one day last week. :( To help her abort the gagging-in-process, we blow in her face to make her swallow. So, it works great if we're right there, paying attention. No clue how long this lasts, but I also hope it's short!!

ohthankgoodness.  I mean, I'm not happy that you are also dealing with it.... wait, yes I am.  That's a great trick -- will try it for sure.

I was beginning to really wonder.  He puked on me the other day, cracked up, then stuck his hand down his throat again.  I (obviously) had to change everything I was wearing.

  • Yes. Totally normal and gross. I just ignore because otherwise he thinks it's hysterical to push my buttons. It will go away, hopefully sooner than later.

Reassure yourself with this--there is some developmental good coming from it. It's helping move his gag reflex back further in his mouth--babies gag reflex is very sensitive because basically any area that's not where a nipple would be makes them gag at a young age. The older they get and the more they put in their mouth, the less sensitive their reflex becomes, which is necessary for using utensils, eating solid foods and all that good stuff.  So he's doing some good with all that gagging......doesn't make it any better, I know.
