Preemies

I know every baby is different...

But can you guys please tell me what week your babies were born, and at what week they came home?

My son was born at 29 weeks and 2 days, he is now 32 weeks 3 days.  He has gained almost a pound, and we are introducing oral feedings to him, and he is maintaining his body temp for the most part.

I'm seriously just getting super impatient, and I want to feel like his mom, and I want him home with me.  Please let me know the dates, I'd sure appreciate it!

Oh here is my AW moment, He was moved from the NICU to the ICC which is the infant care center, where they still need monitoring, but are too stable to be in NICU!  YAY Logan!

Re: I know every baby is different...

  • My DS born at 33 weeks 0 days and came home at 34 weeks 5 days.  He only had to "master" feeding because he had no other issues.

  • My son was born at 32 w, 6 days, and was released at 34 w, 4 days.

It sounds like your son is doing great and really just needs to work on eating.  My bet is that he will be home in about 2 weeks.  Before XMAS - hooray!

  • That's terrific! Sounds like he is doing so well!  Sam was born at 29 and 6, and was in the NICU for exactly 7 weeks.  I know it feels like forever, and although we did want him home with us, we knew the NICU was where he had to be to get the best start possible.  It also helped telling myself that he wasn't even supposed to be with us until August 28th and he was born on June 18th.  When he is ready, he will be home with you.  He just needs this time to get stronger.  And I never did this or believed anyone when they told me, but take some time for yourself before he comes home.  You need to be strong for him, so go out shopping, read a book, take a million baths, get a mani/pedi, etc. etc...b/c you won't be able to once he's in your arms at home! (At least, I can't!).  :-)
  • My baby was born at 26 weeks and came home at 3 weeks.

  • Sorry...I realized there was a typing error. He came home at 38 weeks...not 3 weeks.

  • My son was born at 32w3d and stayed exactly a month.  When he was born they told us to plan on staying 4-6 weeks but by 3 weeks they were already talking about sending us home...the extra week was because we still couldn't get him to take all of his feedings orally so the last week he was considered a "feeder & grower".
  • Mine were born at 29 weeks 5 days.  My daughter came home at 36 weeks even and her brother one day later.  The end is the worst, when you think they are okay and you can handle it and what are they waiting for?  And of course as soon as they tell you you can take them home you think , "Oh boy, what do I do now ?"
  • So I totally didn't know I had my main e-mail signed up with the bump, til I logged in with the wrong name, the one I used for my wedding, and had forgotten all about!

I had one nurse tell me(in the NICU) how selfish it was of me to want him home before Christmas, because he wouldn't have been born yet anyway.  Little did she know, I had a c-section scheduled for Dec 22, at 37 weeks 1 day because of placenta previa, so yes, he would have been home!

I never really liked any of the nurses in the NICU, with the exception of 1, I thought she was a doll, but the ICC nurses are amazing, I want to take them all home with me when he comes home!

I know a preemie baby who was born at 28 weeks, and she was home at 34 weeks, and a couple days, and I find it hard not to compare Logan to her, and not expect him to be well enough to come home in 2 weeks.  I'm just having a tough time not having my baby at home, I feel like I'm missing so much stuff while he's there.  And I also went back to work a week ago, to get my mind off him not being home, and I will be taking my non-paid maternity leave over Christmas, or when he comes home.

  • DD was born at 29w4d and spent 50 days in the NICU, she came home just shy of 37 weeks :)

  • YAY even at 37 weeks, he will still be safe at home and in my arms on Christmas morning!
  • My twins were born at 34 weeks.  Ryan was in the NICU for a week, he was under the bili light for 3 days and then had to learn to eat.  Riley was in the NICU for a week (CPAP for 2 days, bili lights too and then the ICC for another week...she was a VERY lazy eater! So they came home at 35 and 36 weeks respectively.  It was such a long hard wait.....but it will happen soon.  Sounds like Logan is doing VERY well!

  • Brian was born at 30 weeks, 2 lbs 13 oz and came home 8 weeks later.  It took him awhile to be able to nipple 100% of his feedings.
  • I felt the same way... I wanted DS to come home with me when I went home

My son was born 33 wks 4 days and stayed in the hospital for 6 days.

  • twins born at 30w6d.  They spent almost 5 weeks in the hospital before coming home (34w5d adjusted age).
  • my son was born @ 33 weeks and came home @ 34weeks 3 days. We were lucky the only part we had to master was feedings. he came home @ 3lbs 12oz

  • My DS was a 26 weeker and came home at 37 weeks.  The closer you get to the end the harder it is to wait.  My DS was ready at 34 weeks except he decided it would be fun to take forever to learn to bottlefeed.  Once he got the hang of that he progressed quickly.  I know it is frustrating, but one day soon you will walk into the NICU and the doctor will tell you it's time to go home!

  • My son is in the NICU right now. He was born 30 weeks @ 3lbs 7oz.. He has been in ther for 26 days now. The nurses said if he continues to gain weight (he's 3lbs 14oz ) and can take all his feeings through a bottle or breast then we will be comming home way befor X-mas :) I'm excited!!
  • My daughter was born at 32w 2d and is still in the NICU.  Today is 34 weeks.

She has to maintain her temp and get better w/her feedings.  Some days she'll eat like a champ, and others she'll be so sleepy that we can't get to her eat from the bottle or the breast.

She just had her feeding tube put back in.  I'm thankful that that's the only thing I have to be upset about, but I just want her to start eating better.

Also, she's having drops in heart rate during her feedings, b/c she hasn't quite mastered the breathe/suck/swallow coordination. Mostly drops to like 99 or 98 bpm and she pulls herself right back up in one or two seconds.

I feel selfish for wanting her home when I know she still needs to be here.  But I just want her home with us at the same time.

  • ours were born at 29w4d and came home at 36 and 37 weeks.

  • My 26 weeker came home exactly on his due date.
  • Mine were born at 26w, 6d and my son came home at 34 1/2 wks and my daughter came home at 39 1/2 wks.
  • born at 32 weeks, home at 36 weeks. we were told most go home b/t 35 and 37 weeks. I know it sucks but you want to bring home a healthy baby! ((HUGS))
  • DS was born at 28w3d and came home at 41w (A week past his due date)

  • Born at 28 weeks 5 days, a bit over 2 lbs each, came home at 36 weeks even.

My sense from this board when we asked the question in the spring was that right around 36-37 weeks is average time to come home for an otherwise healthy preemie.  To be safe, the MDs say about their due date, but usually, they get strong and skilled enough to come home a few weeks before then.  Depends entirely on the health - mine were born healthy, just early
