Diaper Covers

Hi Everyone,

I'm expecting first and new to cloth diapering. I plan to use a diapering service for the first 3 months so I can get a hang of things and establish routine without the stress of having to do laundry every other day. The service only includes the rental prefolds, diaper pails, and liners.

I will need to purchase my own diaper covers and snappis. I started to researching and looking online....overwhelmed! I was told by the diapering service to purchase 4-6 newborn sized covers, and 4-6 covers in all the rest of the sizes.

Bummis and Thirsties seem to get a lot of good reviews. What are your experience with the two? How many newborn sized covers should I really purchase? 

Also, I will eventually need to purchase my own diapers once I stop the service and the baby will be 3-4 months old. How many of the large prefolds should I purchase? Will the baby still be wearing the medium prefolds? At this age, would it be a good time to try those contoured diapers?

I am also thinking about purchasing the Bummis Starter Kit which comes in 2 sizes - 8-15 pounds and 15-30 pounds. I have read very mixed reviews on the sizing. I've read the 8-15 pounds was too small for some and the 15-30 pounds are too big for a 3 month old baby. Which of these should I get once I stop the diapering service? Anyone used their starter kits? Like it? 

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    I don't know a lot about prefolds, but I just wanted to suggest to you to try using OS diapers once your LO fits into them so your not buying various sizes which can really add up. Also, you might want to try different types of CD's not just prefolds. You may prefer another type if you give them a try. I really like pockets, and I would also suggest trying some AIO's as well.

    The FAQs will give you some good info.

    I'd say 4-6 covers to start. I've used Bummis and Thirsties, and both worked well. But you may be enticed by wool at some point ;)

    I'm pretty sure your 3-4mo will still be wearing small or medium prefolds. DD didn't grow out of nb/XS CDs until 13 weeks. You can try other kinds of diapers anytime you want, and contours are just the tip of the iceberg. Again, see the FAQs

    I'd look into the CD trial at places like jilliansdrawers.com for a more comprehensive starter kit and more options.
