LO with very dry skin

We lather DD up with lotion multiple times a day and only bathe her 2-3 times a week as recommended by her pediatrician and the hospital and yet her skin is still very very dry. Flaky dry and is worst on her hands and feet.  We can't seem to get rid of all the dry skin.  When she was born her skin was dry and the bottom of her foot ended up cracking from it the first day.

Any suggestions?

  • Try running a humidifier. DD also has horribly dry skin and it seems to help some.

  • C had the same thing when she was about a week or two old. Her hands got super flaky. It's normal. They're just adjusting to life out of water. It went away on its own though.

  • Keep using the lotion, it'll get better. DD is very dry, but some of the flakiness is just the fact that baby has new skin. It will get better.

  • I was just going to ask about this. We run a humidifier 24/7 and still have issues. Any recommendations for lotion?

I use California Baby and it works well.  Aquaphor is excellent for patches of really dry skin.

  • Initially babies have peely/flaky skin - this initial skin you are not supposed to put anything on at all (says my doctor) because it makes it worse ...

We were also told only to bathe once a week because too much bathing can dry out skin further ... bathing 3X a week is a LOT for sensitive baby skin

  • Aquafor does a great job with really dry skin for DS and DD. I also do minimal bathing with DS right now bc the air is so dry.

  • My pediatrician said that peeling and dry skin was normal and to leave it alone.  He told us not to put anything on him for the first month at least, in the way of lotions.
