deploying DH - Air National Guard

Lurker here with questions... Background: DH joined the ANG 3 years ago.  We survived basic & tech school (while I was pregnant) and then went back to life as usual. Our LO is now 2.  I have never felt like a military spouse & it really is like a seperate part of his life.  Now we're getting ready for a deployment & I am totally at a loss as to what to expect.

We have done the POA & Living Will, updated all the life insurance policies & beneficiaries, and I finally got my military ID.   Am I missing anything?

He is supposed to be going AD in the next month or so & deployement is scheduled for about 3 weeks later....Now I know there should be pre-deployment training, does anyone know how long that is & typically if that occurs around the time of being switched to AD or if the date we currently have scheduled as the deployment date will be when the training starts?

I'm so out of my element here...I know how to be what I call a "railroad widow" due to his civilian job, but know nothing about the military world.  TIA if you read all of this, any info would be seriously helpful.

Re: deploying DH - Air National Guard

  • Don't feel bad about not feeling like a "military" spouse. When my husband first joined the military we lived off base and the military was 100% his job and not our lifestyle. Then the first deployment came and I was lost. It sounds like you have done everything you need to on the admin side of stuff, but I would make sure you have contact info for people in your husband's chain of command in the event something happened like not getting paid, needing information, etc. Make sure you have  POA specifically for finance. It seems like deployment, TDY, or PCS the pay always gets screwed up.

  • My DH is also deployed - Army National Guard.  He had a 21-day train-up and then headed to the mob station for a month before heading overseas.  How long they are at the mob station depends on the mission they are training for - my FIL who was also in the Army NG has been at a mob station for 2 months before deploying.  The time being swapped to AD occurs when their orders start (the day they are to report to the mob station).  I think the 21-day train-up is treated as an AT instead of being AD.

As far as how to prepare, make sure you have a copy of his AD orders in case you need them, in addition to what you have already gathered.  I agree with making sure you know your POC with the unit, in case any issues arise.  Also, if your unit has a FRG, keep in contact with them.

So there's this boy. He kinda stole my heart. He calls me "Mom"

  • All pre-deployment training is different.  It all depends on how fast they need them in country and what their mission will be.  I agree with PP get the on base chain of command written down so if you need anything they can help you, they are always willing to help.
