January 2011 Moms

When would you take LO to the doctors?

W has no fever, but a mild cough and green snot from her nose. Her breathing is a bit raspy, like its totally a chest cold. I have the humidfier cranking,  and took her in a steam filled bathroom for a bit this morning.

Not sure if I should just keep an eye on this, or what..

Re: When would you take LO to the doctors?

  • I am not really a good judge of this.  I feel like a typical paranoid first time mom all the time.  My dr. said to always err on the side of caution and bring him in.  So, I say, if it would ease your mind, bring her in.

  • I am mostly a lurker but this is my 3rd baby and I still bring her in for everything. i would rather be paranoid and have a dr. tell me it is fine.

The best way to tell if she is having breathing trouble is to lift her shirt up and watch her breathe.  A lot of times it seems like a cold is in a baby's chest and it isn't just seems that way because everything is so small and close together.

  • I would call and speak to the nurse and see what they recommend based on the symptoms.  My main reasoning for doing that is because my doctors have a sick & well waiting room and I hate to go in unnecessarily when I have to sit in the sick child waiting room and risk picking up something worse than what we already have.  If the nurse recommends coming in then I would go in.

  • Unfortunately there isn't much they can do for LO's at this age. All we can really do is work through it. I hope she feels better before her birthday!

I would have to agree and say hold off unless she starts getting a fever or if she wakes up with green mucus in her eyes like Jay did last time he had a cold. Apparently that was enough to skip the appointment and she just gave us a prescription amoxicillin.

  • I learned the last time when I was unsure to just go in. Hope she feels better soon!
  • I would take her in. F had yellow and green snot and no fever (at the time), I took him in and he had an ear infection. They put him on antibiotics. So I'd rather be safe than sorry..you know.

  • I agree with better safe than sorry, no doubt!

She slept 13 hours last night and woke up with no snot. Hopefully she is on the up and up now!
