NBR: Tell me about having a garage sale

We plan on having one soon, and I'm not sure how to go about it.  Do you have to get a special permit? How and where? Also where can I rent long tables?  Any other helpful info is appreciated! Thanks :)

Re: NBR: Tell me about having a garage sale

  • I'd say check w/ your HOA to see what rules apply to your neighborhood.  For the tables, I'd borrow from friends, I would hate to spend money when I'm trying to make money at the garage sale, you know?

I can't remember the source, but there are several helpful websites out there that give garage sale advice/pricing suggestions/etc.  One thing I remember from one of the sites is to charge about 1/3 of the retail price of things, factoring in wear/tear unless it's some amazing collector's item or some highly desirable item (like a learning tower or something).  It also really helps a lot to bundle smaller items and price them per bundle - like "5 for $1" or something for books or CDs or small trinkets/toys.  Or "fill a bag for $5" if you have a ton of something.  You would of course provide the bag.

Depending on how much stuff you have to sell, you'll also want to have lots of change on hand (like maybe $100 worth of 5s and 1s and some coins).

Make sure you and DH are on the same page as far as how low you will go on big ticket items - in case one of you is not outside when a deal is going down.

  • I know our HOA does have special Garage Sale dates ShernRich -- usually 2 a year.  I think the last one was in October? I don't know if they care if you do it outside their dates.

I had horrible luck with my last garage sale -- people wanted things REALLY cheap.  Like, I should donate to Salvation Army instead and save the hassle/feel better about it.  But I didn't do it in our neighborhood.  On the 2 dates a year, there seems to be more activity in the section of the neighborhood across the street, not our little loop.
