Austin Babies

Intro-new to the area, expecting #1

Hi ladies,

My husband and I moved to Kyle in July and found out a few weeks ago we are expecting at the end of July. Due to a medical condition, the baby will probably be 4-6 weeks early, so middle of June-ish. I've been lurking for awhile and just wanted to officially say HI and I hope to learn a lot from you ladies. I'm a teacher, and everyone keeps saying how well this was planned, lol. I just smile and nod, I had no clue I was pregnant until someone told me to go take a test. Anyway, I'm enjoying all the weirdness that goes with being pregnant, and I'm excited to be almost out of the first trimester. I've had 4 ultrasounds, and the baby looks great and has a wonderful heart rate. Should be monthly from now on, until they decide the baby isn't growing anymore or not as fast as should be. Any and all advice is welcome!

Thanks,

Kristie

  • Congratulations and welcome! I think this board is a great place for someone new to the area. We do lots of in person get togethers, and I've made several friends through here :)

    Where did you move from?

  • I'm from Arlington, DH actually was born and raised in north Austin, he moved to Bedford when he was in junior high. He's always wanted to move back to Austin, so when his company closed down, it presented a perfect opportunity. He's getting his MS in Finance from UTSA and I'm a high school science teacher. He'll be a mostly at-home dad in the fall, graduate in December, then we haven't decided on day care or me being a SAHM, depends on what happens when he graduates.

  • Welcome!

From a medical perspective, I would chose a doctor who delivers at a hospital that already deals with severely premature/high risk births. I'm not exactly sure which hospitals those are but definitely Seton and St Davids downtown locations both do Level III Nursery care. Obviously so does Dell Childrens (which I think technically is an IV level care). My own hospital in RR does Level II care which is for infants >32 weeks. I know you don't expect to be any earlier than that but it pays to already be at a hospital that does so there is no unexpected transfers following the birth. Being in a different hospital from your premature newborn sucks.

Keep in mind that if permanent sterlization will ever be considered that Seton will NOT tie your tubes or even give you birth control pills while you are hospitalized there for routine medical care. Something to think about long term.

I know nada about the South Hospitals but my guess is that since they're newer, they probably don't have as much specialty support as some of the more established ones.

  • We've already talked about that with both the OB and the Peri. Basically, if/when I go into pre-term labor (peri said 50% chance by 32 weeks), I'll go to Seton Kyle where they will stabilize me and transport to downtown Seton to attempt to stop labor, if the baby is delivered before 34 weeks, Seton Kyle is not equipped. Anything after 34 weeks, Seton Kyle will be where I stay. I was diagnosed with this condition 12 years ago, so I've had lots of time to prepare. I was actually at a pre-pregnancy consult with the peri on 11/11 and he told me to go home and take a HPT and call back in a few weeks for an appt because he was positive I was already pregnant, he was right, lol.

Thanks for all the welcome responses, I hope to get to know y'all better over the next few months. Everyone have a safe and happy New Year!

  • Cool! I'm a terribly distracted poster! I thought since you were new you were still looking for an OB. Sorry =) Sounds like you have it under control!
