I need an adolescent/adult therapist rec in Central Austin

Hi Ladies-

I'm looking for a therapist/counselor for my nephew who lives with us, preferably in Central Austin. He's 18, and I recently discovered that he's been dealing with moderate/severe depression since childhood, during which he suffered horrible physical abuse at the hands of his mother (who has since died in a drunk-driving accident). His mom (DH's sister) was herself a victim of horrible abuse, and she perpetuated the cycle with her own children.

I knew my nephew's mom had been pretty terrible-- abused drugs and hit her kids. But on the 9-hour ride home from my folks' house my nephew rode with me (the girls drove with DH in his car). He shared with me the extent of the abuse, which I won't ruin your day by sharing. And he admitted that sometimes he wishes he were dead.

Right now we're reading a book on depression together, and we're going to read Man's Search for Meaning (a holocaust survivor's treatise on why life is meaningful even if you've suffered horribly) next week. And I'm trying to get him cozy with idea of therapy, which is not part of his socio-cultural framework at all. Right now he's made very uncomfortable by the idea.

Any recs would be great.

I will DD this post tonight.

TIA!

  • You're a good aunt for helping him out. I don't have any recs, but email Taryne. She might have some bc of her job.

    Of course! Brilliant.

  • William Schroeder at Just Minds. He has lots of experience with teens and adults and it might feel more comfortable for him to talk with another man. If you want a female rec, I would go with Emily Slaughter. Both awesome!
