Alternatives to rice cereal?

I have a recently turned 4month old and am anticipating the pediatrician will be talking to us about solids at his next appointment... Research tells me the introduction of solids isn't necessarily recommended until 6 months if he is being exclusively breastfed... When did you start???

And did you start with something besides rice cereal? I'm not sure I'm such a fan of it and would love to give him something more nutritious if I'm able and it is appropriate.

Thanks!

Re: Alternatives to rice cereal?

  • We started when LO showed interest. Starting soluds is a time consuming activity, so we dabble in it right now until LO shows interest in finger foods. You can look up alternatives on 'wholesome babyfoods' (google that. I don't know the URL) for alternatives. Evergreen hospital may have a 2 hour class that could answer any question you have. I took it with #1, so I don't know if it's still offered.

  • We didn't start till about 7 months.  Mostly I just mashed our food or steamed veggies and fruit.  Evergreen's class is called Starting Solids and is great.  They don't have to start with rice.

  • We started around 6 months, though DS didn't show much interest until around 9-10months - it was more playtime than anything.  DS hated all of the baby cereals.   Avocado was a big hit early on.

I second the wholesome baby food website - they have some GREAT info on it.

  • We're skipping all cereals per our pedi (he says they have zero nutritional value outside of iron for low-iron babies).  But I know that's not the question...

We're starting with whatever solids are on our plate.  At 5.5 months he's had several veggies, most raw, and a few fruits (avoiding citrus, my first 2 had skin reactions early on).  DH has has given him a taste of ice cream too.

Mostly I'm going really slow because I prefer breastmilk poop to solid food poop by a large margin.  Usually we just give him food to "play" with and some of it ends up in his tummy.   Baby's receive 99% of their nutrition from milk (whatever the source) until they're 1 or so...

  • We started at 5.5 months, but my son had no interest in swallowing anything but liquid.  We decided to do mostly Baby Led Weaning, with a little purees/jarred foods.  It's been a great decision and we're all loving it.  DS loves to put everything in his mouth anyway and now he's also swallowing.  He is only now interested in eating rice cereal, but he also gets finger-size foods of fruits, veggies, meats, crackers, breads, puffs, Mum-Mums, etc.  He still has no teeth, but that hasn't stopped him from taking bites. :-)  Like pp said, it's easy to give him some of what you are already serving.

ETA:  Oh, and we started with sweet potato and avocado, both of which he disliked (though he now loves sweet potato).  He has liked bananas and apples from the start and also loves carrots.

  • All of mine we also EBF. We didn't try anything until 6 months, even at that my firt child didn't have interested until 8.5 months, my middle child would not eat solids until 15 months (he refused), but my youngest (and the smallest for her age) was eating pureed foods like a champ right away. I recommend staying away from rice and going for oatmeal and then avocado. We typically do oatmeal, avocado, then whatever veggies we are having for dinner cut up really small or mashed. Also if they don't have a bowel movement for 24 hours take a break from the solids until they do. This is simple rule can save you and your child a lot of worry and sometimes doctor visits.

  • We gave her tastes on our finger starting at about 5 months.  Her own food a bit after 6 months.  Bananas first, which were hard to hold onto.  We did baby led weaning, so she used her own spoon for yogurt and oatmeal.  Early favorites were salmon, hard boiled egg, and pluots.  Now she eats everything!
