A friend recommended this site for me because of being away from family and I would love some advice.
We live in South Korea (non military) and if you think they are intervention crazy in America it is even worse here!!! I have to find a new doctor and hospital at 23 weeks pregnant because it is their policy to require me to have an enema, catheter, be on my back once I am there and a time limit on my labor and a host of other things. It is ridiculous.
we wanted to do a homebirth but there are no midwives in my city and the only one that will travel charges 3,500 for her services (sounds cheap but a hospital birth here without insurance is 1,500. their healthcare costs are amazing) and we can't afford to use her. We are thinking about a doula but its also kind of expensive and I am not if it is worth the money. Does anyone recommend a doula and why? Also what kind of things can I do to prevent unnecessary interventions at a hospital? Doctors here aren't used to questions or patients wanting explanations or informed consent. No one here questions them they just do what the doctor says always.
Re: New to The Bump
Prepare yourself as much as possible for using natural coping techniques (bradley, hypnobirthing), hire a doula if you can afford it- she can come to your house and help you know when it's time to go to the hospital; you'll likely go sooner if she's not there, and that's my biggest piece of advice...stay home as long as possible!
Also, is there a way to talk to the HB midwife, see if you can work out some sort of either a payment plan, or if you get your prenatal care with an OB, and she just starts coming to see you once you're full term- maybe she will work with you? Good luck!!
