  • Follow up question -- if you went earlier than 20 weeks, did you do an elective u/s to determine the sex or no?

I'm just curious, since I've read posts here from people whose doctors did not want them to go any earlier than 20 weeks.

Also, were you more excited to find out the sex or to see the baby and see for yourself that your LO was healthy?

Thanks for indulging my curiosity, ladies. :)

The a/s was exciting but also intense because what they are doing is pretty serious. I have a second scan this week to follow up on something found at my first.

I went at 19 weeks, but we had an elective ultrasound at 15 because DH and I were anxious to know the gender.  DH and I enjoyed the elective much more than when our tech told us the gender (she showed us her crotch for 2 seconds, said "congrats, it's a girl" and moved on because she was in a hurry.)

  • 19 weeks with my first 2 and 18 weeks with #3, all were for my A/S - not elective. Sex was definitely obvious for all 3.

  • The tech actually told us he thought it was a girl at my 12 weeks exam/ u/s. But we weren't counting on that, since it was so early. But at our 18 a/s he could obviously tell it definitely was a girl.  So no elective, our doc is fine with doing it between 18 and 20 wks.

  • It was much easier for me to schedule it during the week between Christmas and New Years as I was off.  Plus this made it possible for my parents to attend as they live 150 miles away.

We chose not to find out, the tech took a peek, said it was difficult to tell.  My parents looked but she didn't say anything and they couldn't tell.

We were just glad to see that everything looked great with baby.

*Lurker jumping in* I had mine done at 19 weeks, my midwife said that anything after 18 was acceptable and we had reached our deductible for the year so doing it before the 31st meant it was cheaper.

I told my mom, I was excited to find out the gender but I was anxious to know that everything was ok with the baby. If we didn't find out the gender I would be ok - we are doing everything gender neutral and not telling our friends and family the gender anyway. Baby was cooperative though, everything checked out great and I am such a grateful mamma because of it! I did finally do some shopping after finding out the gender but knowing my baby was healthy made my day.

  • To answer your follow up question....

I was 19 weeks when I had my A/S. We did not have an elective u/s to determine the sex prior to 19 weeks. For me it was more of a relief at the A/S when I saw how big the baby had grown and to see her moving and that she was healthy. I had not had and u/s since 8 weeks. We did not find out the gender until we had our gender reveal party so all the excitement of finding out if it was a boy or girl did not happen until that night.

  • My MW said 18-20 weeks, we got ours at 18 weeks, because DH was going to be out of town for several weeks after that. No elective scans here.

  • We had ours just 1 day shy of 19 weeks. During all of the serious stuff, the radiologists asked if we would like to know the sex and we said yes... and she told us. It was pretty simple.

  • My dr offered at 15 w 6 days. She offered, because she said a lot of people were wanting to find out for xmas, so the could shop. So, I took her up on it. The u/s tech just told us the sex. But I figured if something was really wrong, she would have gotten the dr. But I get my big a/s tomorrow, and I will be 20 weeks.

I didn't do an elective u/s (my A/S was at 17w4d - 18 weeks by lmp according to my peri, who scheduled it), and we had no trouble clearly seeing the sex.  Partly it depends on the position of the baby, of course, but it was very clear on the screen.

I'd be a little concerned about everything being seen or that being sufficient, if I didn't have additional u/s scheduled to check the placenta and cervix.  My peri is doing another level II later this month as routine follow-up.

I was far, far more excited to know the baby was healthy.  It was nice to have the sex confirmed (other u/s and early b/w had given us a relatively good guess - we were 90% certain)

  • I just went at 18w4d (last Wed) and we were told the gender. Tech had her guess and confirmed w/ peri.

  • We've opted out of non-standard testing, so any relief that the a/s brings relative to health will be a Godsend.  First tri bloodwork came back fine, but that's been 7 weeks ago, and a kinda-sorta "all clear" would be sweet, sweet music.

Excited to start name selection and nursery planning once we know the sex, also.

  • I can't vote - it won't let me! But I will be 20 weeks 2 days when I have my anatomy scan and according to my doctor's office I will be 20 weeks 4 days. They would not let me schedule until at least 20 weeks exactly. I am excited to find out the sex of the baby and anxious to make sure everything is growing OK. I have a lot of anxiety so when something exciting comes at the same time as the anxiety, I try to focus only on that so so far, I've only been focusing on finding out the sex and being happy about getting to see LO again. All the rest will hopefully work itself out!! 6 days!!

Mine was scheduled by the doctor.  It was not elective.

I was more excited to see that the baby was healthy.  I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy so I was very anxious to make sure everything is ok.  I only found out the sex because my husband really wanted to know.  Although I am very happy to know that we are Team Pink, I think next time, I really want to be Team Green.

  • I'll be just 21 weeks and a like 2 days or something like that. I had an elective one at 18 weeks. My husband is deployed and he really wanted to know what we were having for his christmas gift. For me I wanted to know the sex but I just really wanted to see if there was a baby in there. (sounds stupid I know) I mean, I saw the belly and had heard the heartbeat several times but it just didn't seem real.

So after the elective one I found myself a lot more relaxed and able to enjoy it more. I have finally got to were I feel excited and just a lot more at ease. It was well worth the money to not have to wait for that sense of relief.

This too. Although it was my mom, and my best friend with me they made it VERY special and she spent lots of time letting us look at her and it was enjoyable. We got LOTS of pictures and got to hear her little heart beat for what felt like minutes. My OB, its like there it is and only lets you hear it for long enough for the doppler to pick up the beats per minute. Then ask if you have any questions as he is walking out the door. Which I am sure that's just part of having a doctor that is in high demand. I'm not super in love with him but I like his staff a lot.

    ramble...over.
