Preemies

? If you delivered around 34 wks

Hi Ladies, I was in L&D on Thursday with contractions that were 5 minutes apart. I was 34w 1d so the doctors said they wouldn't do anything to stop the contractions nor to progress the labor. The contractions went away after drinking lots of water and resting then walking the halls, so they let me go home.

My question - if you were contracting like this did you deliver within a few days or a few weeks? I'm trying to understand the likelihood that I'll still make it to 39-40 weeks - or if that's a crazy idea and baby is more likely coming in the next 1-2 weeks.  I realize every pregnancy is different and since this is the preemie board I won't be hearing from women who went full term, but I appreciate any stories you can share. Doc didn't really tell me and nurse commented that she thought for sure my contractions would continue and I'd be having a baby that day. I've continued to have contractions every day but not every 5 minutes.

Thanks!

Re: ? If you delivered around 34 wks

  • I delivered at 33 weeks due to possible atypical pre-e, but while I was hospitalized from 31-33 weeks there were days where I would be in a regular labor pattern with contractions less than 5 minutes apart. I was already on magnesium due to possible pre-e, and that helps with slowing down contractions. And they also gave me a muscle relaxer on occasion. In my situation, the contractions never lead to any progress and eventually went away on their own.

    Sending positive thoughts your way!

  • I started having intermittent contractions at 19 weeks and they increased steadily from then on. By 26 weeks I was having several an hour. My OB still thought I would go to term. I delivered DS at 29w4d, but when I really went into labor the contractions were the same frequency but much more intense. I also had an abruption at the end that sped things along. I think the bottom line is, you just don't know. You may want to make sure your bag is packed to be on the safe side. GL!

  • As PP said, make sure your bag is packed! My situation was different (I had HELLP), but I had a c/s at 34w1d and just wanted to say that the good news is that babies born after 34w rarely have long-term problems and usually only have a short stay in the NICU. DD was in there for 16 days and had an NG tube for a few days because of eating issues, but in retrospect 8 months later, it doesn't seem that long (did at the time, of course). I hope you make it to full term, but if not, then we're here for support!

  • I was having bad Braxton hicks from 26 weeks or so, nothing was severe enough to change my cervix at all. At 32 weeks I went to the bathroom and there was blood when i wiped so I went to my doctors right away.  It turned out I was having consistent contractions and was dialated 2 cm.  They put me into L&D right away and they gave me steroids for the girls and medication to try and stop the contractions. For me nothing worked. My contractions became painful and kept coming as frequent as a minute a part. by 32w5d i was dialated more and had to have a c section.  It definitely came fast and out of no where...so I think the babies are the only ones who will know when their ready.

Good news is you already made it to 34 weeks and that's great for you and the baby!  Best of luck and I hope you make it as long as possible!

  • I delivered at 34w1d after being on bed rest for 6 weeks due to a shortened cervix and early dilation.  I know that one time (at 28 weeks) I was sent to L&D for a few hours because I was having regular contractions (4 minutes apart).  I couldn't feel them but they were showing up on the monitor.  I was hospitalized at 33w5d because by then I had dilated to 4cm.  At first they tried to stop labor but that didn't work, the next morning I was at 6 cm.

No idea why it all happened, might have been irritable uterus caused by fibroids (or maybe an infection, as I tested positive for Group B Strep).

I don't know if that's helpful to you, but I wish you the best of luck, and I hope your baby can cook a bit longer!

  • Thanks for the responses and encouragement. We're still hanging in here at 35 weeks. I go to the doctor tomorrow so I'll be curious if I'm dilated any further. When I was at L&D I was 1cm and 50% effaced. I've been having contractions everyday but not at regular short intervals, but have been getting a lot more uncomfortable moving around.
