Anyone dealing with extreme constipation (TMI) ??

I am so miserable.

I've tried everything...Colace, extreme amounts of water, metamucil, tons of vegetables, exercise and nothing. I became nauseous from being so uncomfortable, so I gave myself a suppository (which I knew I shouldn't do during pregnancy) but I was desperate. It gave me only mild relief.

I am just so uncomfortable, really hurting. I go to the doctor on Tuesday, but does anyone have any advice/suggestions?

Thanks, sorry for the unpleasant nature of this post :)

  • Prunes?  I've been using metamucil every day and it seems to be working for me.  Sorry you're dealing with this, hopefully your doctor will have something for you!

  • Have you tried activia yogurt?  I am really liking there new yogurt plus cereal .  Of course my poop is like pebbles coming out but at least it's moving out somehow :) GL

  • I had this problem about a month ago and asked my OB b/c I was so uncomfortable.  She suggested increase fiber intake, lots of veggies and fruits, and hot tea.  She said any warm liquid will help soothe the digestive tract, so I have a chai tea every morning (70mg of caffeine).  I also started eating the Fiber One cereal that has about 14g of fiber per serving with apples for snack and that helped a great deal.  Drink lots of water too!  Hope you find something that works for you soon!!!!
  • I have the same problem, plus GD so stuff like prunes is out.  Eat high fiber food-beans and drink tons of water.  It helps.

  • Prunes and Applesauce. Works for me every time.

  • Thanks so much.

I'm drinking hot tea now. I forgot about the Fiber One cereals, but I will def pick that up in the morning. Unfortunately I'm dairy intolerant, so no yogurt for me, but thanks for the suggestion!

  • Have you tried a few sips of coffee? That's all it takes for me every morning. Has been a lifesaver.

I saw the other day that yoplait is making Lactose Free yogurt! I don't think there are a lot of choices, but just FYI :) However, I don't know if it would help with the constipation since it's not the "super probiotic" type.

I suggest Raisin Bran or a Fiber One cereal every morning.  This was the only thing that helped me.  I hear that hot water with lots of lemon helps (so if the tea doesn't cut it) but it didn't do much for me.  Also, I suggest talking to your doctor about a prenatal without iron or with less iron because iron is likely the culprit for what is stopping you up.  It will all depend on your iron levels/history of iron levels, but it's worth asking about! HTH!

  • I have heard that chia seeds can work wonders. You just add them to water, they are basically flavorless.

And yes, they are the seeds that are best known because of the chia pet. I think you can buy the seeds at health food stores (or you could buy a chia pet, I guess? haha).

I'm lactose intolerant too, and let me tell you, a glass of chocolate milk every morning has been the only thing that's gotten things moving for me!

  • My doc told me to take Colace daily, as well as 2 tablespoons of mineral oil with 1% chocolate milk. I mix the oil with 1/2 to a full cup of milk, and it works like a charm. Working out has also helped a TON. Not to give you TMI, but I went from one BM every few days to twice a day. So, needless to say, it worked for me! :)
