VBAC

Overweight and VBAC

After a good appointment with a new doctor a tmy practice yesterday, I am considering the VBAC. The other Drs there are rather pro RCS.  I was reading online, babycenter, about how a risk is having a higher BMI.  Is there any correlation about this? Anyone have any insight? Thanks.

Re: Overweight and VBAC

  • Sure, there are some complications that are more likely to happen if you are overweight that can result in a RCS (bp, uncontrolled GD, etc.).  However, imo, you really have to focus on YOUR pregnancy and what's going on with you vs. statistics since we aren't talking about 95% of overweight women not being able to have a VBAC or anything close to that.  There is a lame-o calculator that tells you the likelihood of having a VBAC, but it can't tell you what will happen with your birth.  Kind of like when someone receives a cancer diagnosis, the statistics don't mean anything if you are that 1% that doesn't beat it or vs. versa.

Here is a blog post on the topic though:  https://wellroundedmama.blogspot.com/2010/12/fat-vagina-theory-soft-tissue-dystocia.html

  • C/S is also riskier if you are overweight. Check out your local ICAN for more info and support. GL!
  • I really don't know, but I can tell you that I had a successful VBAC and I am overweight. Like PP said, there are increased risks being overweight and PG no matter how the baby is delivered. So focus on yourself and your baby and go for the VBAC if that is what you want. GL!
