false positive with a cheapie test, anyone?

Let me preface this by saying I do NOT think I am pregnant, but I'm still nursing and have yet to get my period back so I decided to test yesterday for the heck of it... there was a shadow of a line with one of those cheapie cassette-type tests from Big Lots (2 for $1.90!).  I chalked it up to evap line, although it occurred within the allotted time.  Tested again this AM with the same brand test - definite faaaaint line (DH confirmed that) so I tested with a +/- test from Walgreens and it was definitely negative.

Anyone get a false + with a cheapie?  Pleeease say yes.  Although I'd love another baby, my sister is pregnant and I'm really looking forward to enjoying HER baby first! :)  I'm probably going to end up getting another brand to confirm either way later.

Re: false positive with a cheapie test, anyone?

  • Uhhh...not in my experience. A lot of times the cheapie tests are actually more sensitive than the more expensive tests. I got a faint positive on a cheap test on Friday and a negative on a digital test. On Saturday I got a light positive on a different brand of cheap test (Dollar Tree). On Sunday I got a positive on a digital test.

I had the same thing happen with DD - faint positive on a cheap test, negative on a digital test, and then a couple of days later positive on a digital test.

  • I am going to Dollar Tree now, ha!
  • Was it pink or grey?  My "false positives" with the $ store ones weren't actually false!  I had positives with those two days before it came up positive on FRER or the digital.

  • False positives are soooo rare. It is much more likely that the negative was a false negative. I had a very faint line the first time I tested when I was pregnant with Julia. A line is a line. I would go get a first response test and see what that one says. Good luck, I hope things turn out the way you want.
  • Yes, I got two false positives from a really cheap brand of test strips. It was confirmed to be negative with a blood test at my OBs office.

It was really horrible at the time...I had an IUD in at the time, and DD was only a couple of months old, so I still had 2u2.  I was really, really happy to find out that it was a fluke.

  • uhh, no. i used $tree tests and they were only positive when it was for real.

  • How long in between were the 2 tests today? And if its not TMI, was the $ store test done with FMU. This could be why one showed + and the second negitive this early. Just a thought.

  • I have always gotten a positive on the cheapies, the two times was pregnant.  They were accurate.  I have read that the more expensive test that say "pregnant" are less sensitive and the positive will not show up as soon.  How many days out are you?  I got positives on the cheaps, faint but there, around 13 or 14 days.
  • No experience here, I never bother with the cheapies because I would doubt them. Keep us updated!

  • Ok, tested with another brand early detection one - NEGATIVE!!!  I tested with the cheapies with FMU and then another randomly and both were positive-ish and the other two brands were very clearly negative.  I'm going to test with another cheapie and another brand (I seriously have like 4 different brands of tests in my house now!) with FMU in the AM but I'm like 95% sure it'll be a negative.

Phew!  We'd be excited for a new baby but now would be less than ideal!  Thanks for the insight gals!

  • A LINE IS A LINE, SISTER!!!!

Oh my goodness, I am so excited for you!  Keep me posted!  Happy New Year to the fam!

  • I've gotten a false positive on a CVS brand pregnancy test.. it was the digital kind. It clearly read "pregnant" and I wasn't (had bloodwork done that day to make sure!)

  • HAHHA, Colleen!!!  Do not get yourself excited here, sister!  Took another test with the same brand that gave me 2 positives - NEGATIVE!!  I really think that box was a a faulty one.

Happy New Year to you guys, too!!
