July 2012 Moms

infant daycare is expensive!

Holy guacamole batman! I just got a quote for infant daycare in Colorado at $1,200 a month! Hubby just got a promotion with a pay raise so he says I could stay at home if I wanted. I don't know if we can afford for me to stay at home (and still have extra spending money for fun stuff), but then again... maybe we can if infant daycare is that much!

I know costs go down the older they get... anyone else started to research infant daycare costs in their areas?

Re: infant daycare is expensive!

  • We live in a super rural, LCOL area.  I pay $320 a week for all three kids (including multi-kid discount).  The daycare center they attend is the best in the county.

My sister would pay $260 a week for an infant in the cleveland area.  I don't feel so bad about my weekly daycare bill anymore.

  • Sorry, lurking here! In my area it is like 300$ a week for an infant and then for DD currently (who is 16 months old and in the toddler room) is 210$. It's expensive. For both my babies it would end up being like 500$ a week for the kids. Hence why I am now a stay at home mommy

  • Yes. I live in the WashDC area and infant care at a center can run $1500 - $2300 per child. I feel your pain.

same! I was in shocked when we started looking. The thing that blew me away even more than the cost... the wait list!

  • That's about par for the Dallas area too... Infant care is $250/week. DD goes to pre school part time and we pay $150/week for 3days per week.
  • my toddler goes to an in- center and we pay $1000 a month. With two I think we will pay about $1800

  • Here in NYC it is $350 a week...so $1400 a month.  DH figured we would be basically paying over $15000 a year for it.  I am still on the fence about staying home.

  • Boo. My mom was going to watch the baby, but my teenage sister just found out she is pregnant and due a month after me. So, I bet I now need to research this. I will probably hire a nanny. Childcare isn't too bad in this area and I would feel comfortable with a student nanny. I used to do it.

  • It's expensive here too ($1500-2300/mo). There's a chance that my MIL will be able to watch the baby when I go back to work. I REALLY hope that works out!

  • no, i haven't started looking yet.  i probably won't until about 6 months.  we are hoping family will volunteer a couple days a week to help with the costs.

do any places have cameras?  i'm just curious.

same thing with me except my younger sister is 29 - but she lives closer to my mom and is in school still - so needs my mom's help more - now i have to look at daycare and it is 1,200 per month - considering staying at home or working part time - dang sister getting pregnant! she totally threw a wrench in my plans!

  • Yes, I don't live in a HCOL area but the nicest ones in my area, and the ones I'd consider using, are about $1200/month. Given that is more than half of what I bring home in a month, I'm going to SAH. DH makes significantly more than I do, though, so the loss of my salary really won't be missed, thank goodness. We'll make up for it by not traveling so much anymore.
