Talk to me about the name "Owen"

We just confirmed we are Team Blue and we're finally getting serious about names. We have a very long, Italian last name, so here are my criteria for names:

- Not too common/popular, but not "weird."
- Timeless- not something a kid is going to grow out of
- Not too long or two many syllables.
- Doesn't end in a hard C or K sound (as that's what our last name starts with)

So, essentially Owen meets all of my criteria (and is FIL's middle name). But I just don't LOVE it. However, I can't come up with anything I really love.

DS is Bennett (and we always call him Ben), which I adored. So, this one just isn't quite as easy.

Talk me into Owen (as DH really likes it) and I want it to grow on me.  FWIW, it would probably be Owen Michael (Michael is DH's middle name)

How do Ben (Bennett) and Owen work together?

I also feel bad that DS#1's middle name is a DH family name and now DS#2 will have a first and middle DH family name. But my family has terrible names that I really don't like. And call me superficial, but it's more important to me to give my kids "good" names than to use a family name I hate. :)

Re: Talk to me about the name "Owen"

  • I think Owen and Ben sound really good together. We are using all gaelic names for our children, and Dh shot down every name I through out except Liam, so I think DH's win a lot :) personally, I think the name Owen is likable. Even if it does make me think of Owen Wilson....

  • I like Owen and it goes well with Ben.  Try using it out a bit more and see how you feel about it.  DH also was the final say on our name choice (Garrett).  I liked it but loved a few other names he vetoed so I used Garrett a bit and the more I used it the better it fit.

Other names that may fit your criteria are Ryan, Owen, Grant (this was my fave that DH said no to), Gavin, Drew (DHs fave until a friend named used it for his son)....good luck!

  • I like the name Owen, and it sounds good with Ben, but honestly its quite popular right now...

  • I love Owen!  One of my friends actually has an Owen and Ben and they go really well together.

I think using Owen in honor of your FIL is a great idea.

  • My nephew is Owen.  It's an adorable name, but will also translate well into his older years.  I'm sure people will start calling him "O" by high school.  I think Owne and Ben are fine together - the different syllables make it less rhymey.

As for the family names thing - I doubt your kids will even notice and while your family would probably appreciate a family name, I doubt they will really care or judge you for it.  With my brother's kids, they all have family names from my side...okay...that doesn't help...I win on that one...but I really don't think my SIL's family cares.

  • I love 'Owen'! That was our choice for a name if we were to be having a boy. He would have been 'Owen William', but we are being blessed with a daughter instead. Still in the running for our next child if its a boy then. Good choice!
  • ::lurking...::  my cousin just named her son Owen Michael. He is our godson. The name suits him though I wasn't a huge fan at first. I think it's a good one. I think that kids just grow into their name and it doesn't really tater how tey sound until they belong to someone.
  • My Sec 2011 mom friend just named her son Bowen. It's growing in popularity but is a very sweet name!!

  • I like Owen also but DH shot it down. Eli was the only name DH and I could agree on and when we agreed I wasn't that big of a fan. Honestly, I was secretly looking for something else. But the more it got used and said out loud, I fell in love and couldn't imagine using anything else now.

  • Owen is NMS. I think there are better choices out there that go with Bennett.

I will say if my husband's name wasn't "Ben" I would totally steal the idea of "Bennett" LOVE that name. :-)

We are struggling with Irish boy names, I love Luam-but dh said no.  do you have any othe Irish names you had thought of I suggested Jameson and Connor.

  • I personally love the name Owen (obviously) but I agree with one of the PPs, when we picked it I had never met anyone named Owen or heard the name that much but a few short months later it's everywhere! He'll probably be one of many in his class, we still love it and we're sticking with it but if you don't want something too common that's not going to be the case. I found a list online where it was ranked #5 in popularity. It is a great name though.
  • We picked it specifically because it wasn't common. But if it is now, I don't care. He's already Owen to us.

  • Interesting. On the SS name list for 2010 it ranges from 40-something to 90-something (depending if you look by national or our state). I hear it a lot on the Bump, but not in real life. I wouldn't consider that too popular, but perhaps it will gain in popularity soon???

That was my impression too. Nobody that we know has that name and when we tell people we are naming him Owen, they say that they don't hear that name very often. If you like it, go for it :)
