Umbilical hernia?

Hi ladies! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday Big Smile

Just wondering if any of you have experience with umbilical hernias? One of my girls has one, moderate in size. Our pedi said we just observe it and they generally correct themselves. They don't even consider alternatives until she is 4 years old. I'm totally fine with the "watch and wait" thing, and I rarely even notice that she has it now! Just wondering if anyone with older preemies could share their experience of when the hernia corrected?

It doesn't bother me a bit, but it does make me a little sad when others see it and act like she has something wrong with her. I try to educate them that it is not harmful and fairly common but I still don't like people to treat her that way Sad

    My DD had one...and the doctor just said we would watch it as well. In the beginning, I thought it was HUGE and it bothered me a lot. Now, I don't know if she has it or not...but I can't see it. It probably corrected itself a few months ago.

    My DD had one that self-resolved around 6 months actual. It just kind of slowly went away and then one day it was gone. Her pedi checked it at each appointment but said as long as it was soft (ie you can push it back in) it shouldn't cause any issues.

    Henry has a pretty big one. In some pics people thought it was his penis Wink. Most correct by age 5, so I'm fine with watching and waiting if it means avoiding surgery. I know what you mean about ppl being weirded out by it... my MIL made all sorts of comments while she was here. Not fun, but it's his only "preemie" issue right now so I know I shouldn't complain!

    Emmeline has one and it is also a wait and see thing.  Hers is about an inch distended from her belly.

    My DS had one as well and I believe it corrected itself when he was around 1yr. My DS ped said they do in most cases. Good luck!

    Owen has one but I can already see it gradually getting smaller.  We were told its nothing to worry about and to check it every diaper change to see that it is not hard.

    My DD has one and the pedi said they usually don't do surgery on them until they are 3 or 4 years old, but she has recommended that we fix DD's around 1 year of age as it is extra large and she is anticipating her having lots of loose skin around her belly button, which we don't want DD to have to deal with the rest of her life.

    Andrew still has one, he's 3, and having surgery soon (we had to cancel he was sick) to fix it.

     

    Elliott had one, about the same size, but it closed at about 3-4 months.

    My full term son had a medium sized one and they said if it wasn't closed most of the way by 2 years they'd go in and fix it, and it fixed itself around 22 months.

    My 33 week preemie had a HUGE one (at least 3/4 inch in diameter) and all of a sudden one day she woke up and it wasn't there. The skin was a bit loose, but no more protrusion, and that was at about 4 months, 2.5 adjusted. Now she's 6 months and you can barely tell it was ever there!
