I have no idea when I should start a baby registry or really what I definately need (excluding the obvious things ie. diapers, thermomoter, crib, cars seat, diaper bag, stroller etc).
Is earlier registry "better" so it's out of the way and done or is it "better" to register later just in case, god forbid, anything go wrong? Also, is there anyrthing you wish you had registered for and didn't or anything you just can't live with out?
Thanks, any recommendations are very appreciated!
Re: Registering for baby...
How far along are you? Do you know if someone is throwing you a shower? IMO first tri is way to early. If your like me, you will be paralyzed by nausea soon, and a registry will be the last thing on your mind.
I would never register in the first tri. Also, most people wait until they know the sex of the baby and have their AS scan for make sure everything is healthy - heart, kidneys, cord flow, brain, bowel, etc.
EDIT: Also, stores discontinue items all the time. So if you register now and you are not due until July, Aug. and Sept. then most of the stuff on the list will prob be discontinued, out of season, etc.
I've miscarried in the past. There is no way I would register in my first tri...but I also wouldn't be telling people.
Yes, I am aware of losses after the 1st tri.
Like a PP said, if you register now, a lot of the stuff will be out of stock/gone by the time ppl go get it. It doesn't hurt to start researching cribs, strollers, carseats, nursery decor etc.
We waited until 27 wks to register for DS.
Just start reading about things and researching now. There is a book that gives you the ratings on almost every baby item imaginable... I can't remember what its called though dang it...

Do you know if someone is having a shower for you? If so Im sure it will be in your 3rd tri. I would wait to register.. do it some time in your mid 2nd tri. You can always go online and look into stuff..
I registered for my first at 18 weeks ONLY because DH and I have opposite schedules and with work it was hard to make plans to do such a thing. We didn't buy our first item until I was about 28 weeks and that was a cute outfit, then after that we didn't start getting things together until 32 weeks.
IMO, if you start too early you will be so bored and the 9 months will seem like an eternity. I agree you want to get things done before you get miserable and big, but 1st tri is way to early!
I registered at 22 weeks w/ DD and then the seasons changed and 1/2 the stuff I registered for (even the bedding) was no longer available. My friends told me they were throwing a sprinkle for me when I was preg. w/ DS and to put together a little registry; so I seriously waited til 3 weeks before the sprinkle since I just needed some boy basics (sheets, blankets, basic layette). It was like a 20 item registry w/ nothing over $25.00.
The only things I regret not registering for (but survived 2 kids w/ out) were a bottle/jar warmer (which I think I'm splurging on now), a bassinet (because I figured the pack & play had a bassinet top but that things a pain to set up & doesn't fit through door ways easily if you want to move it around) and that's really it.
I took a bunch of advice from mom's and didn't get a sterilizer. I bought the medela steam stererlize bags instead. Each bag gets 20 uses! They take up virtually no space. And the playtex mini fridge to go I still use. You can use it for formula or breastmilk in the beginning, then milk later & jars of baby food and now I put juice boxes & string cheese in it when we're going out.
