Refinishing a dresser - help?

So I am on coat #3 of primer on a dresser I am refinishing for Charlotte's "big girl" room. I sanded the dresser down, I explained the project to the guy at Home Depot and bought the stuff he recommended, but the orange-y color is still peaking through. Anyone have any tips or tricks? I was planning on painting the dresser white, but should I pick a color to combat the orange?

Re: Refinishing a dresser - help?

  • Primer isn't meant to hide ALL the color, it's just meant to prep the surface for paint. The actual paint will cover much better. Are you painting a stained or oil-based painted dresser? If so you really should use an oil based primer - and then you can just use the reg latex paint. Water-based primer may not stick as well and you could get some bubbling OR make it super easy to scratch paint off.

If you feel like you don't want to do the oil based primer (it STINKS) and can't wait for better weather to do it outside...just put a couple of coats of your white paint on and you should be fine with hiding the orange.
