1st Trimester

1st Trimester Dad

Hello all. I'm ecstatic about being a first trimester dad. My wife is very sick, not flu sick, but nauseated most of the day. She should only be at 5-6 weeks and feel very sleepy and cold. The temp in the home is constantly at 72 which is comfortable and she also wears warm clothing but is still more often then not...cold. Would any one of you be feeling the same? What remedies have you found that helped?

Re: 1st Trimester Dad

  • Umm, that sounds like the flu and nothing to do with her pregnancy. She may want to call her primary care physician.

It's nice to see even the 1st tri fathers ae losing their minds.

  • Nausea is common. Get what to expect when you are expecting. Read it. Read it to your wife. It will answer most of the questions like this that you will have.

  • I'm cold all of the time too. It's not uncommon. I do hope her symptoms are pregnancy symptoms though and not the flu. Either way, make sure she is drinking all of her water - at least 64 oz a day and more is better. Good luck.

  • I've felt that way for the past 5 weeks, and I can assure that I didn't have the flu.   OP, hope your wife feels better soon.

for naseau- you can try sleeping, and eating every 2 hours and eating healthy foods.  I have to say usually when pregnant you are too hot not cold.  as your body is producing more blood.

I am in winter season right now, and I am so hot I can't wear my winter coat as I sweat and I have been sleeping with the window open.  Im in Canada - and its freezing out like -5 /-6 degrees.  lol

I would get her to the dr and see - as the cold all the time is very off and sounds like a flu.

  • For nausea (as mine has been brutal so I can understand):

*My OBGYN gave me a prescription for Reglan, an anti-nausea med, that's safe for pregnancy and definitely works. There are others but the ER said Reglan has also been shown to help headaches during pregnancy.

*Ginger ale with REAL ginger i.e. Canada Dry. I've found that the regular, non diet, works better. No caffeine is best for the sleeping issues she may encounter soon.

*Anything to 'soak' up the junk in the stomach like saltines, bread, cornbread, etc. Have her keep these on the bedside table, along with the ginger ale.

*As pp said, eating every 2 hours, small meals, no fried/fatty/spicy foods. I've found mashed potatoes and chicken have worked for dinner for the past week for me.

*Don't spring out of the bed in the AM, wake up gradually.

*Don't try to 'fight' the vomiting, I always feel better afterwards but make sure she's either drinking or getting IV fluids (if the vomiting is persistent).

I'm cold but it's also because the heat is low. May want to mention it to the doc, I don't know? But, other than that, my FI got me fuzzy Dr. Scholl's socks, bra on always, sweatshirt/sweatpants, slippers, under the blanket.......if she's working and cold, may want to try a Snuggie! GL to her, is she on here? Reading others' stories makes me feel less alone.

She's lucky you're so concerned! I'm emotionally a mess right now and my FI's support has been crucial!

I agree with the PP, the temperature variation tells me it's the flu, not morning sickness.

However, to combat actual pregnancy illness, have her take her prenatal vitamin at night right before bed.  Also, eat all the time.  I found having small snacks stashed everywhere helped.  At the very first wave of nausea she needs to eat.  Whatever doesn't make her sick, she needs to eat it. My snack of choice were Quaker Oats chocolate granola bars.

Congrats on your new family member!

Oh, yes, the iron in the prenatals can make the nausea so much worse so I can only take them at night. I've also heard that for the first trimester, you can ask the OB about getting a prescription for a prenatal without iron.

  • I have been freezing since the beginning of this pregnancy. I don't remember feeling that way at ALL in my previous pregnancy. If she doesn't have a fever then I would be surprised if that's the pregnancy.

So far with this pregnancy I don't seem to cold but I was cold almost all of my pg with my DD. In June I was going to work with more clothes on than anyone else and I was 7 months pregnant. This is the opposite of most pg women who are always warm but not illness related. Just bundle up. I wear socks and leg warmers, pants, a tank top, long sleeved shirt and fleece. If you have a cat or dog than she should cuddle with them. For nausea she needs to eat ALL the time. A couple crackers, ginger snaps or anything she can every hour or two. This should help her from getting really nauseous. An empty stomach is a pg woman's worst enemy.

  • I'm cold with this pregnancy and I was in the beginning of my first pregnancy as well. Good luck to you and your wife.
