Bedtime misery...

DD moved into her "big girl" bed in October.  She did great with it, and has slept through the night and napped wonderfully.  Fast forward to a few nights ago when at around 4am she started freaking out and ran to her door.  DH went up to her room and calmed her down, but she was shaking and would not sleep in her bed.  He stayed with her.  Since then, bedtime is a royal battle.  Most nights, I am putting DD2 to bed, so DH puts DD1 down.  Lately, when DH leaves the room, about 30 seconds later she runs really fast to her door and starts screaming and crying.

We've tried putting her back to bed without saying anything, but this is repeated about 20 times in a 5 minute span, we've tried me putting her to bed, we've tried staying with her until she falls asleep (which she then wakes up and runs for the door), having her sleep with us, etc.  We are at wits end and I cannot keep up with putting down DD2, then laying with DD1 waiting for her to fall asleep..blah, blah.

We are pretty sure something scared her, but she won't tell us what.  All she says over and over is "I go lay on the couch".

Any help or suggestions would be great as I don't want to start a bad habit by sleeping with her... THANK YOU!

  • Let her pick out a new stuffed animal that will "protect" her from anything scary?

  • I am probably no help because this is DD first night in her big girl bed but what about putting up a baby gate or allowing her to sleep with the door cracked or something?  This could eliminate the fear of being alone in her room.  Also, the new stuffed animal to protect her idea is a good one! Good luck!

  • Thank you both!  I was thinking about a new stuffed animal to protect her- we'll try that tomorrow night.  I also wondered about leaving her door cracked/open.  My fear with that is that DH and my bedroom is downstairs, and I'm afraid of her coming down half asleep and falling...though we can close the door to those stairs.  Hmm...sounds like some new ideas for tomorrow- thank you!!

  • A night light with special powers? DD is now "scared", I have a night light which she likes now and also we check the closet and under the bed before she goes to sleep. GL!
