Trying to Get Pregnant

New Year traditional foods (GTKY)

My grandmother was very superstitious and had to cook all the "right" foods for the new year.  She always did an elaborate lunch of all kinds of lucky foods such as greens, black eyed peas, pork, fish, cakes, ect.

I don't do as much as her but I have started my own tradition of sorts.

I do- roasted grapes with Italian sausage.

Collard greens with bacon- for money

Lentils with sausage and rice- for money

Pork is supposed to represent progress. And this year I'm also doing a leftover Christmas candy pie. :)

What traditional foods do you do and what do they represent?

Re: New Year traditional foods (GTKY)

  • My grandma is southern too. Black-eyed peas are a must for her!

My mom hated BEPs, so we didn't follow those traditions, but if we don't have roast beef, Yorkshire pudding, baked potatoes, and pie, it feels wrong!

  • Pork, collards and black eyed peas. Doughnuts for breakfast because they are round and represent the cyclical year. No poultry because it scratches backwards and you want forward movements.

I was going to make doughnuts also but I'm already so busy in the kitchen. Pie for breakfast I suppose :)

This is our tradition, and this year we've added black eyed peas and collard greens because we'll take all the luck we can get!
