dog...NBR at all but advice wanted

My Boxer has a cut on the top of his head that he seems to keep opening up. It is smaller then a dime. It keeps scabbing over and then he scratches it and it opens back up again. It is now mildly raised, which Im thinking is just from the scabbing...Should i take him to the vet. It has been a couple of weeks with this and it is not getting any better. I am assuming the only thing they can do for him is make him wear a cone which is so not an option he destroys them.

I mean i know when you get a cut and it scabs over it tends to itch so i am assuming thats why he is doing it.

  • If its not deep I don't think I'd spend the money ona  vet bill...not sure how to discourage him, maybe call your vet?
  • Loading the player...
  • load it up with neosporin and give him something else to do like a bone to chew on.  How long has he had it?  I wouldn't worry too much unless it starts looking infected or isn't healing after a couple weeks.
  • I go by this rule: if it's not bothering them, it's not worth taking them to the vet. Unless he is fixated on the area, he's fine.

  • Unless it's very swollen or you see pus draining out of it I'd say just let it be, unless it looks like it's a deep puncture wound.

  • Just call your vet and tell them you want to avoid bringing him in, but would like a home remedy. My boxer/pit is super clumsy and he had bumped his ear on the stove and would not let it be. Petsmart has some soft/plush head cones. With a little vaseline and discipline and the cone for a day or so he was back to normal.

This!  I don't think there's anything else they'd do for him (other than a cone).

  • He may need antibiotics if its deep or still fresh looking. Two weeks is a long time. I would pribably take my dog in but we have pet insurance so it takes some of the sting out of our overpriced vet.
  • Do you know for sure it is a cut?

It probably itches and that's why he keeps scratching it open. See what you can put on it to help ease the itch. I should know, but I can't think for the life of me right now what would help. Neosporin would probably help with healing and scratching. It isn't infected is it?
