Hospital Bag

I know this is probably a common question on here - What should I have packed for the hospital? I am having a rcs, and am curious if there are any tricks, items, etc that I should make sure to have to help with the recovery, breastfeeding, baby, etc. I haven't had a baby in 5 yrs - I feel like a first time mom!

Re: Hospital Bag

  • Agree with pp, also would add that I loved having my own toiletries and wish I would have thought to pack nursing bras/tanks.  Don't forget your camera and/or computer and chargers.

  • I actually had my mom bring me thinner pads because the pads at the hospital are huge and I didn't need them that thick (and I bled a lot and for 11 weeks so those pads must have been BIG!)  So, I would pack some thinner pads if you are picky about that stuff.

Also, I wish I had my nursing cover in the hospital.  People were coming in and our all day and I was always exposed.  It would have been a nice help.

I really liked having my own shampoo, conditioner, soap etc.  I also brought my hair dryer and makeup.  It made me feel better about myself since I was really bloated and yucky afterwards.

  • Every single thing people said above.  Having nursing bras and my own comfy clothes to change into and my own toiletries really helped me feel like myself.  Those were probably most important to me.  Oh, also my own pillow.  The hospital ones are a non-breathable material under the pillow case and it made me sweat like crazy.  I quickly had dh bring me my own.

  • I brought a boppy pillow, pj's, lounge pants, hoody, slippers, my own pillows, boyshorts, and then the usual tolietries (lotion, razor, shave gel, brush, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, shampoo etc)

After many years and tears our baby boy is finally here

  • I completely agree with the nursing bras (the sleep kind) and your own pillow.  One random thing I sent someone after for me was baby nail clippers.  I will remember to bring them next time.  My hospital didn't have any/refused to clip them for you and his nails were sooo long and he was scratching up his little face.   I would have also taken more pants I could wear.  I had one pair of sweat pants that came up higher that I wore for the entire week I was in the hospital.

My DH was sitting here when I was reading your post and he said to tell you take lots of things for your DH to do if he's staying.  He said food and money were at the top of the DH list. :)

  • I brought my own clothes and the Boppy but really didn't use them. I had trouble finding a place for the Boppy that didn't interfere with my incision. Instead I used a rolled up blanket. I didn't change out of the hospital gown until it was time to go home. Of course I wasn't moving around all that much either. Nail clippers are a good idea as PP said because LO was scratching his face.

If you have dealt with hemorrhoids at all this pregnancy bring your Preparation H. Even though you are not pushing, the long periods of sitting around hurt mine, and I had to wait several hours to get any ointment because it required a prescription from my doctor.

Edited because I am an English teacher and that's what we do.

  • my own underwear

    toiletries

I bring my own pillows (one to lay on and one to hold into the incision so I can cough, laugh, sneeze)

    boppy pillow

slippers (the more you walk the better you are)

    robe

    my own nightgowns

a going home outfit that was below incision line

    baby coming home outfit

my own super maxi pads (the hospital ones annoy me after I am up and about on my own)

I don't breastfeed so....I buy sportsbras.  So don't forget nursing bras or something for extra support when milk comes in.  My milk always comes in when I am in the hospital.
