I only give apple juice to my kids when they're constipated. Otherwise it's just unnecessary sugar. I wouldn't buy baby apple juice. I just get regular organic.
I gave some to DS1 when he was 2 mo old because he was constipated. It was at the Pedi suggestion. He told me to buy the regular kind of apple juice and dilute it. My boys are almost 1 and we rarely give them apple juice. I rather have them drink water or milk. Also, it creates a huge sticky mess on our tile floors. We will give it to them on road trips or when they are starting to get constipated or dehydrated from sickness.

We've never given the LOs any juice. We'd do it if they were constipated, but that's never happened. Otherwise, there's no need for it. They are better off with just milk and water.

this. My mom keeps wanting to give it to them, and I keep telling her no. They drink plenty of water and juice. They don't need the sugar.

Same for us too. Even the few times DS has been a little constipated, we've stuck to giving him fresh pears and that seems to do the trick without juice. Our preschool is on a no-juice policy as well.
To answer your second question, the gerber and Motts for Tots seems to taste more diluted and not as sweet as the regular apple juice. IN my opinion it is yucky!
Pedi's will tell you no juice... however, I started giving DD juice over the summer b/c she just won't drink water, we were outside all the time, and it was so hot... I dilute it so I'm giving 1/4 juice to 3/4 water... so she never gets more than 6-8 oz of juice per day.
I think there's no difference w/ the gerber other than it's expensive! I buy whatever's on sale. I agree w/ PP, motts for tots is gross, and a waste b/c I dilute it anyway, making the "real" stuff last a lot longer.
Re: Apple juice?
Pretty much this.
