Potty Training

Okay, walk me through this...

My DD is ready to PT.

She has been coming in the bathroom with me and wants to get paper and pretends to wipe her butt and then wants to flush the paper

She has been telling me when her diapers are dirty or wet.

Just last night she said "Poop Poop Momma", which usually means she already went in her diaper, but when I checked she was dry/clean.  Five minutes later she had pooped.  So she was telling me BEFORE she went, and had I listened, she'd have pooped in the potty and not in her diaper.

So, all that being said, I am going to get a potty ring (to put on/in our toilet for her to sit on) and a step stool for her.

How do I do this?  Do I buy underwear and start that? Do I keep her in diapers?  Do I get pull ups?  I know I have to take her to the potty on a consistent schedule (Once an hour?), and give her rewards for going in the potty and not having accidents.

Help!  I'm clueless!

  • I'm sorry I won't be much help. But I understand just where you are!

I thought I'd have another few months before DS was interested in PT. He's never wanted to do anything other than flush the toilet after I go. Suddenly today, he kept saying "potty" "potty", pulling the foot stool up to the toilet and he'd pull his pants down and try to pee. I think I should take the hint! I'm going out in a few minutes to buy a toilet seat for our pot. But first, I'm looking on here for tips :)

  • I did a potty training weekend.  bare bottom when DS was 22 months worked great.  The baby center website has great tips.

  • We're are ending week 1 of PT of DS1 who is 25 months. Here's what we did. We put him in underwear right from the start. We had a ton of accidents the first day and half - then all of sudden it clicked and he didn't want to feel wet anymore. After that he has gone in the potty. At first, we constantly asked him if he had to go but also tried to get him on the pot every 30 minutes. The constant nagging was not good and he started to scream/cry every time we put him on the pot. So my sister recommended a potty watch that can be set for a certain time period and plays music. Now we don't nag (unless we see signs that he has to go) and let the watch get him excited to go on the potty.

Also, we did give him rewards. Stickers worked great for the first 3-4 days but they lost their luster. Then we moved to M&Ms (1 for pee, 2 for poop). Since he is going back to daycare on Tuesday, we've also started to phase them out but we still make a big deal every time he goes in the potty (pee or poop). He doesn't seem to notice anymore.

Also, something my sister said was to tell your LO that there are no more diapers in the house so they know there is no going back. We have a 4 month old so DS still sees diapers, which didn't help on the morning of day 3 - but I was able to convince him to keep going. We use pull-ups for naps and night time but we call them special underwear for sleep only. We'll tackle sleep PT when he's got daytime PT down to a pat.

    Hope this helps!
