anyone have hand foot and mouth disease as an adult?

Soooo, i've been sick as a dog since before christmas...first it was a cold, that turned into a massive case of tonsilitis and now, hand foot and mouth. DD was the second case of hfmd at her daycare last week and I guess since I never had it as a child, I got it from her. And my case? About fifty times worse than hers. the blisters on my hands and feet are so numerous and painful i can barely walk or do anything!  if you have had this, or your kiddo had a particularly bad case, how did you take care of it? i know it's a virus so there's nothing i can do but let it run its course, but is there something i can do to "calm" the blisters down? and how long do they hang around? any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ps sorry about the caps, im on my very fickle blackberry.

Re: anyone have hand foot and mouth disease as an adult?

  • I had this over the summer. It was horrible! I didn't have it on my hands and feet, just in my mouth and throat. It took at least 8 days from the first symptoms before I could eat normally. The only advice I have is to rest as much as you can! Get help with your LO if you can. I'm not sure if your doc told you but you are very contagious and should especially stay away from anyone who's pregnant. The virus can terminate a pregnancy. Hope you get better soon! Maybe try cortizone for the blisters on your hands and feet??

  • OMG  I had the same thing, over the whole last week.  Began with chills, low fever, sore throat, body aches.  Progressed to EXTREME tonsillitis over xmas eve/xmas, then Monday started with the blisters and THEY HURT!.  Finally about 3 days after the blisters came, I started feeling better.  Now the blisters are calluses and look gross and annoying.

At least I didn't overeat on the holidays, cause I couldn't eat anything.

    Feel better!

  • Oh and to answer your question, I don't think there is anything you can do.  Advil/tylenol for the pain and discomfort, and I used cloroseptic (sp?) spray on my throat like every 15 minutes.  My daughter had it this fall, and she was miserable...now I know why.
  • Yes and it SUCKED!!! Except I had all of the blisters in my mouth! Could not eat for almost 2 weeks. Had to have Ensure supplement drinks.....so disgusting, and painful. Just have to ride it out. Hope it gets better soon :-(
  • It is one of the worst times in my life I've ever been sick. I had the fever and chills too two days before the blisters showed up.
  • uggh, I was afraid y'all would say that. Ive had the blisters like three days now and they do not seem to be getting any better. In fact I think I am getting blisters on top of my blisters. Cortisone takes a bit of the itch away but it still feels like my hands and feet were thrown in a vat of acid. This is seriously the grossest thing Ive ever been through.. and Ive had a car accident where I got multiple compound fractures!
