As it turns out, in order for me to attempt a VBAC next time around, I'll have to go to Portland. I would love to know about your experience and any advice I could tuck away for next time....!

Re: **littlewinnie**

  • My experience at Maine Med was GREAT! The nurses there were super, super helpful. I think my favorite part about my experience was how accommodating the nursing staff was - they took our birth plan seriously, unlike some stories I've heard where the birth plan goes right out the window. Actually, we almost deviated from our birth plan (I asked for an epidural), but my awesome nurse came in and took charge, got all of my family out of the room, and helped me make it through without one.

One thing that's important to know is that Maine Med is a teaching hospital. It didn't bother me, but just about every step of the way they were asking for my permission to allow students to shadow. There was a nursing student that stayed with us through my whole labor...he was actually really awesome, and a bigger help than my DH! Haha!

I definitely recommend taking a tour first if you can. It is the type of hospital where you have to visit multiple rooms... you go from Triage to L&D, then to the room where you stay until you leave. It didn't bother me to be moved, but it probably would have been easier to be able to just stay put in one room the whole time.

They are huge on skin to skin as well as rooming in. We actually got to spend about 3 ours with just me, DH and LO doing skin to skin in L&D right after he was born. It was amazing! They have great LC's as well, I'm actually headed there right now for a consultation to help with some nursing issues we are having.

Overall, my experience was absolutely wonderful. If you can think of any other specific questions or concerns, I'm happy to help fill you in!! :) Will you need to pick an OB down here? I could definitely make some recommendations if you need them!

  • Thanks! :)  That is all GREAT information!  I'm glad you had a wonderful experience there, and based on what you said,it sounds like we have similar preferences regarding labor and delivery.  I would love recommendations for an OB. We aren't looking to have another baby for about 2 years, but at least I will be able to keep your suggestions in mind!
