Would you go Ice Skating?

We're going to Tahoe this weekend with friends...I'm a huge Skier (bummed I can't go)...but would you go ice skating? Maybe hold hands with your husband? lol. So many restrictions while pregnant I hate it.

Re: Would you go Ice Skating?

  • I think I might if I had the opportunity and inkling. I would just go slow and my hubby stay there to grab on to. I think if you did fall you could get your hands and knees under you and not hit your belly. Ultimately it's whatever you are comfortable with.

  • No.

I'm a decent skater but I wouldn't put myself in to a situation to fall and hurt the baby.

  • I've been wondering the same thing.  I want to go so bad.  I haven't been in years.  I was always ok at it.  Not good by any means, but I managed to not fall but maybe once.  I don't know if I trust myself enough.  I'll probably hold off til next year when DD will be old enough to enjoy it as well.  Have fun if you go!

  • No. Not at all. But, I've only been ice skating like 3 times in my life so I really don't trust myself.

  • I don't know if I would (but I rarely ice skate)

I did see an ice skating instructor who looked to be 7 months pregnant teaching 3 little girls how to skate when I took DS to an ice rink last week

I guess if you are a good skater and do not plan on on any triple salchow jumps it might be okay...lol

    Yup, me too!

  • I wouldn't because even if the baby was OK when I fell (when, not if), I would probably hurt my butt and the only thing we can take is dumb Tylenol!

  • At my local rink they have things that kind of look like elderly persons' walkers for beginner skaters. You hold onto them in front of you for balance and skate to your heart's content! Especially with one of those, I highly doubt you'll fall.

Hope you have a great time no matter what!

  • nope...I wouldn't. I'm just starting to get used figuring out the center of gravity with my new belly that I would be completely off balance and may get hurt.

  • I was thinking about this just this week as where we live, we have the longest outdoor skating rink, but I have to say, I agree with most posters...I have ice skated all my life (without being a professional or instructor!), but wouldn't risk it. I feel like I'm already so much more unstable than before being pregnant, even walking, and it would be quite an adjustment with the new weight repartition on skates...I just don't trust myself! But if you held on to DH and went very slow I suppose that would be the best way (although maybe not as fun!).

  • I literally just did go ice skating like 4 days ago.  My husband questioned whether it was a good idea, but we were on our Christmas Vacation, out of Texas, so it was cold and the conditions were right for ice skating, so I went ahead and did it.  I didn't want my DH and DS to have all the fun without me, so i went ahead and did it.  It probably wasn't the smartest thing to do, but I figured if I fell it would be on my butt and everything would probably be ok anyway.  It's all up to you and what you feel comfortable with!

  • Nope..I have enough trouble walking. To me it isnt something that would be worth risking getting hurt just to go ice skating.

  • I watched everyone skate yesterday and just took pictures.   I didn't want to risk anything.

  • if your belly is sticking out at all, probably not...  the other thing my doc said that got me to stop playing sports before I really wanted to was the fact of the ligaments loosening and increasing the risk of injury.  If you are skilled at it and know how to be super careful, maybe it'd be okay, but I've only been a handful of times, so I wouldn't.  **I have been wanting to take my kids roller skating though, but I think I will end up not for all the same reasons.  boo!
  • Center of gravity is different, ligaments are looser, you can't control other skaters and you can't guarantee that you fall on a 'safe' part of your body.  So no, I wouldn't go skating.  A simple fall can cause placental abruption, which could be fatal (to baby and to you) and that is not worth the risk for a little bit of fun to me.

  • I wouldn't.

Before I got pregnant, I worked at a Sonic Drive-In where all carhops were required to skate. When I found out I was KU, I kept skating and didn't tell my boss (because he would NOT have allowed me to skate anymore, for obvious reasons) but I was constantly falling because my center of gravity was changing.

Not saying you shouldn't ice skate just because of the risk of busting your asss... That wouldn't bother me. But if you fall, you never know how bad it will be or where you will land. Accidents happen.

  • No way.  I love ice skating and DH and I go several times a year, but there's no way I'd risk it.  I don't feel like my balance is really off, but I'm not willing to get out on the ice and find out I'm wrong.  Not to mention that if I were to fall there might be nothing I could do to stop myself from falling on my belly.

A friend of mine was jogging with her dog when she was pg and she got tangled up in the dog's leash.  She fell so quickly that she didn't even have time to react and catch herself.  She ended up being admitted to the hospital just for observation, but they said her hands weren't even scratched at all b/c she just didn't have time to put them out in front of herself.

  • I probably wouldn't but i however did walk up steps of an icey mountain and along its edge. (Once i got up there i realized how insane i was being.) Then again my husband would probably run off and leave me alone on the rink so... Anyway its really up to you.

  • I wouldn't, but that's because my husband and I are both clumsy and I would definitely fall!

  • I was a competitive figure skater for 8+ years. My husband and I went when I was 22 weeks.....he wasnt sure I should get on the ice. I am keeping myself off the ice until baby comes so I don't do anything too crazy. Most likely you will fall on your butt or your hands will catch your fall if you fall forward.
